Pedestrians need to follow simple rules for crossing roadways

WHUMP! followed by the sound of tires screeching and broken glass. That is what I expected to hear when I watched the pedestrian cross against the red light and walk into the travel lanes as traffic approached.

What made this worse was the fact that it was at night and the man was wearing dark clothing which made him all but invisible to oncoming vehicles. The truck ahead of me did not see this individual and, at the last moment, the man jumped out of the way to avoid being struck.

Grand Opening of Serenity Meditation Studio in Carson City

Serenity Meditation Studio in Carson City is a way for me to give back to the community. As a Registered Nurse I see first hand the many problems that our current Physical and Mental Health Care Systems face.

I believe that each of us has a responsibility to be a part of the solution to our Health Care Crisis. Our lives today are so fragmented and full of non stop go, go, go and stress, stress, stress that we have forgotten what it's like to just relax and breath and enjoy the moment.

Column: Attention! May I Have Your Attention Please?

In my opinion, a parent’s consistent and regular positive attention to and engagement with their child is the single most important aspect of the parent – child relationship. Nothing says “I love you” or “you are important to me” more than that one on one time. It is the cornerstone of attachment and bonding between the child and parent. That positive attention says to the child “you are safe and secure”, “I am here for you”, “I value you”.

You can help: recruit more foster homes in Carson City

Carson City children need more Carson City foster homes. Children who are taken "into care" by the state due to abuse or neglect are often placed with relatives. But, if that cannot occur, the child is placed in a foster home. These children need to remain in their community — in their school, with their teacher, close to their friends and close to their family — while the child welfare case proceeds and it is determined whether they can return to their home. Carson City does not have enough foster homes.
