Life of Julia Bulette featured at Leisure Hour Club dinner meeting
Members of the Carson City Leisure Hour Club will learn of the loves and losses of Julia Bulette, renowned resident of Virginia City, at their dinner meeting on Wednesday, October 18.
Bulette’s murder began a manhunt that last over a year and resulted in the arrest, trial, and the April 24, 1869 execution of John Millian.
In what was the largest gathering of people in Nevada up to that time, 3,000 to 4,000 people were present at the hanging.
Among the viewers was Mark Twain, who was in the area to give a speech. Assuming that no one would attend the speech, he opted to attend the event. Subsequently, he wrote a lengthy letter about his observations for publication in the May 31, 1868 edition of the Chicago Republican.
Presented as a Chautauqua character by Leisure Hour Club member Kim Copél-Harris, ‘Queen of Tarts’ Julia Bulette was a woman well-loved by the Virginia City community and described as “having caressed Sun Mountain with a gentle touch of splendor” by a local miner.
Julia's greatest triumph is reported to have occurred when the firefighters made her an honorary member of Virginia Engine Number 1. It is reported that on a July 4th, the firemen elected her the Queen of the Independence Day Parade, and she rode Engine Company Number 1's fire truck through the town wearing a fireman's hat and carrying a brass fire trumpet filled with fresh roses.
Ms. Harris is an accomplished Chauatauquan who has portrayed living history characters at various venues including the Genoa Cowboy Festival, Pipers Opera House, and The Lake Tahoe Chautauqua Festival. She has served on the Board of the Lake Tahoe Historical Society and the Douglas County Historical Society where she continues to volunteer. She also owns and operates “Genoa Historic Ghost Tours,” which is an historic walking tour of the town of Genoa and is the Events Manager at Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park.
Born and raised at Donner Lake, CA, Kim grew up immersed in the history of our west and enjoys not only sharing what she has learned about our history, but continuously learning from those who have lived it.
If you would like to attend this event, please call the Club’s reservation chair at (775) 400-2647 no later than Thursday, October 12 to make your reservation. The meeting is preceded by a buffet dinner at 6:00 p.m. in the Carson Nugget Capitol Ballroom. Reservations for the meeting and dinner are required.
The Leisure Hour Club, established in September of 1896, is Carson City’s oldest continuously meeting social organization. Continuing to celebrate its 122nd year, the organization is focused on its goal of promoting knowledge on important issues, science, music and literature.
