Celebrate World AIDS Day with a FREE HIV Test

Carson City Health and Human Services encourages everyone to learn their HIV status today as the Health Department will join thousands of other healthcare providers and clinics across the country to celebrate World AIDS Day.
While low-cost HIV testing is always available at the health clinic on Long Street, testing will be offered for FREE today, Thursday, December 1. No appointment is necessary and the free testing will be available from 9-11 a.m. and 1-4:30 p.m.
HIV testing is fast and easy. The simple blood test involves a quick finger stick, and it only takes 15 minutes to get results. The professional staff at the Health Department will give you your test confidentially. The CDC and Carson City Health and Human Services recommend routine testing for all individuals aged 13-64 annually. Those who engage in high-risk sexual behavior or use intravenous drugs may need more frequent testing. Pregnant women should be tested during the early months of their pregnancy to help eliminate transmission of HIV to their infants. If you aren’t sure about risk factors for HIV, call the health clinic for an assessment.
HIV testing is the key to prevention, as the CDC estimates that one in five people with HIV in the United States are not aware they are infected and could be passing the infection along to their partners. Early diagnosis is critical for people who are HIV positive, so they can benefit from treatment. New treatments have allowed HIV-positive people to live longer, healthier lives.
In addition to testing, HIV services offered by Carson City Health and Human Services include case management, a support group for those infected with HIV, and referrals to area health care providers.
Don’t forget – Bring in 2 canned food items between now and December 9 to receive a voucher for a free flu shot, redeemable any Thursday in our clinic while supplies last.
