Welcome Carson City to our list of things to do around town as we prepare for Wednesday, Feb. 13, with an arriving storm that is set to bring rain, wind and snow showers to the Carson City region over the next few days along with several feet of snow to the Sierra.

Here is what's happening on your Wednesday:

— Learn to Paint like Elaine de Kooning at the Brewery Arts Center. 9 a.m. Join Deanna Hoover in the Brewery Arts Center painting studio, for her popular “paint like” series; this time, you will be studying and learning to paint like the artist Elaine de Kooning. All levels are welcome! Elaine de Kooning (1918-1989) was an American painter, teacher, and critic known for her work with abstract expressionism. Her portraiture often features friends and family, but her most famous sitter was President JFK. Elaine de Kooning was a social activist, especially the women’s movement. However, most of her early artistic career was spent helping Willem de Kooning — her husband and fellow artist — complete his art: often, coming at the expense of her own work. Today, her art is revered for its unique use of obscured characteristics of model, figures in motion, and light brushstrokes of the abstract expressionist movement. Understand the art of Elaine de Kooning better as you delve into the specific techniques and styles featured in her work! These workshops are not simply copying a finished piece as a group and going home with a project like everyone else’s but will have you practice new skills and styles of art that you can adapt into art of your own creation.
The “paint like” series classes take place on the first Wednesday of each month from 9:00 to 3:30. Lunch will take place from 12:00 to 12:30, so bring a sack lunch or eat at one of the nearby, local restaurants.
The cost of the class is $50 and is to be paid to the instructor on the day of the workshop. A basic supply kit can be purchased at the BAC’s Espresso Yourself Café or you can bring you own supplies! The supplies you need are:
• Oil or Acrylic Paints; including all primary colors, brown, black, and white.
• Paint Brushes
• Painting Knives
• Palette or Palette Paper
• Canvas or Canvas Board (your choice of size)
• Brush Cleaner and Jar
• Easels, tables, and chairs will all be provided.
The Brewery Arts Center is located at 449 West King Street.

— Open Studio Painting at the Brewery Arts Center. 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Work on your own paintings from subject mater you chose for yourself. The instructor will provide one on one instruction throughout the class. Students may use oil, acrylic, or watercolor paint. Dry media is also welcome. Bring your own supplies and source materials (such as photographs or drawings you wish to paint). This in an open enrollment drop in class so there is no need to enroll in advance. Classes: 9:00-12:00 or 12:30-3:30. $25 per session or $40 for the day, payment made to instructor. — Basic Pottery Skills, 1 to 4 p.m. at Ogres-Holm Pottery. Studio manager, Lucas Lamont, introduces you to clay, in this 6-week open start class, designed to get you started with clay. The syllabus includes pinch pots, coil pots, sculpture, and an introduction to wheel throwing. $175 for 6 week class including open studio times or $45 for drop in classes. 1215 South Carson Street.

— Alzheimer's or Related Dementia Family Caregiver Support Groups. 1 p.m. We welcome family caregivers of a loved one with an Alzheimer's Disease or related dementia diagnosis to join us at our monthly Caregiver Support Groups. Where: Carson Tahoe Cancer Center, Conference Room, 1535 Medical Parkway in Carson City. When: February 13, 2019 and every second Wednesday of the month. Time: 1-2:30 p.m. Facilitator: Barbara Singer.
Our Family Caregiver Support Groups are not for the person with the diagnosis. If you need information regarding respite for your loved one so you are able to attend the Support Groups, please feel free to contact the Alzheimer's Association at 1-800-272-3900.

— Wine and Dine Water Color Classes. 3 to 5:30 p.m. Students get a reminder text each week. Drop in basis – no monthly commitment necessary. — Pajama Story Time for kids at Carson City Library. 6:30 p.m. Wear your PJs for a bedtime-themed storytime! Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times. 900 North Roop St. Carson City.

— The Greatest Showcase Variety Show at the renovated Bob Boldrick Theatre in Carson City. 7 p.m. Come one, come all to the Greatest Showcase Variety Show! In honor of the re-opening of the renovated Bob Boldrick Theatre, there will be a night of variety acts. Celebrate with us as we watch performances by: Western Nevada Performing Arts Center; Youth Theatre Carson City; Suspect Terrane; Wildhorse Children's Theatre; Studio E Arial Arts and Carson High School Choir and Drama. This is a FREE event. The Bob Boldrick Theatre is located inside of the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street at the corner of N. Roop.

— 'Tell Me You Love Me' Romance Film Competition open for registration. Tell Me You Love Me Short Romance Film competition is now open for registration. Starting on Wednesday, Jan. 30, registered filmmakers will have exactly one week to conceive, write, produce and complete a short romance film that’s between 5- and 9-minutes long.
All of the films will be screened at a special dinner and screening event at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City on Valentine's Day. “We offer a great alternative to the usual Valentines Day activities; people can enjoy a nice catered dinner and watch some great films made by local filmmakers,” says Darla Bayer, the President of Wired Wednesday Digital Arts Association, the organization that runs this film competition and two others throughout the year. Filmmakers may register at www.wiredwednesday.org, and reservations for the dinner and screening event may be secured by calling or texting Bayer at (775) 830-7939. Last year’s event sold out several days before Valentine's Day.

— Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition, "The Felt Works" exhibition featuring the works of artist Svea Ferguson. Exhibit runs through May 3 at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery, 885 E. Musser Street in Carson City. The gallery is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday.

— "Home Means Nevada" photo exhibit debut at the Nevada Legislature. The Nevada Arts Council is unveiling a new traveling photo exhibition, “Home Means Nevada” that will start its journey in the hallways of the Nevada Legislature during the 2019 session. The exhibition features the works of 15 contemporary photographers, but which echoes famous photographs and artwork from the late 1800s and early 1900s that helped spur protections for many of our nation’s national parks. The exhibit highlights some of the unique treasures found on federally managed lands across the state, from bighorns to Burning Man, to the ancient rock art and petroglyphs in the Gold Butte area. The exhibition will be displayed in the Senate hallway of the Nevada Legislature, 401 S. Carson St. in Carson City. The Legislature’s 120-day session begins on Monday, Feb. 4.

— The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, "Photo Finished," at the Community Development Building (the Brick), 108 E. Proctor Street, Carson City. Eleven artists from Carson High School have work in the exhibit. The free exhibition is available to the public from January 14 to March 31, 2019, Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m. The artists are all students in Photography Instructor Kara Ferrin’s Advanced Photo class.

— Clothing and food collection drive underway for Carson City homeless.
UPDATE: Thank you, Carson City, for all your donations to the homeless drive! Your generosity has been amazing! Because of the overwhelming response, we have a lot of items that are not needed at this time, so I am planning a clothing/rummage sale in the near future with all the proceeds going to the Do Drop In Homeless Center to help keep their doors open. If you have items to donate to the sale, please call me so I can arrange to get them from you. Please don't drop off any more donations to Grocery Outlet. Now that the holiday season is over many people forget about the great need the homeless face everyday here in Carson City. With some of the coldest weather still ahead of us lets do what we can to help those suffering from homelessness. I'm collecting items for the Do Drop In Center and the homeless of Carson City. Some of the items needed are: Warm socks, Jackets, gloves, sleeping bags, blankets, hats, camping gear, tarps, and hygiene products. We are also collecting canned goods, nutritional snacks, hot chocolate, oatmeal, individual servings of juice as well as coffee, tea and soup that can be used at the center. Volunteers and money donations to keep the Do Drop In doors open are always needed. Items will be collected now through March. — Nevada Artists Association presents New Year's Show at BAC. 10 a.m. The Nevada Artists Association presents The New Year's Show. The featured artists wall at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City will also be presenting the works of Dick Carr and Reta Hanks. These shows are free and open to the public. The NAA Gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is located on the campus of the Brewery Arts Center at 449 W. King Street in Carson City. — Art exhibit 'Korea '76' featured at the Carson City Community Center's Sierra Room. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition "Korea ’76" with work by artists Eugene Rolfe and Gig Depio in the Community Center’s Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition is available to the public now through Feb. 28, 2019. Note: the Sierra Room is closed for renovation from Jan. 18 to Feb. 6.

— Dayton High School athletic registration open for spring sports. Dayton High School Spring sports registration for baseball, softball, field and track, boys golf has begun. Registrations must be complete by 3 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 14. Current fall and winter athletes must register as well for a spring sport if they are participating. — Statewide presentations on radon safety. January is National Radon Action Month, and University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s Radon Education Program is offering free short-term radon test kits to Nevadans from Jan. 2 through Feb. 28. Radon test kits are available at Cooperative Extension offices and partnering locations, as well as at presentations, statewide. Radon is a naturally occurring, radioactive gas that is colorless, odorless and tasteless. It comes from the ground and can accumulate in homes, raising the risk of lung cancer. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates 21,000 Americans die each year from radon-caused lung cancer, killing more people than secondhand smoke, drunk driving and house fires.For more information, call the Radon Hotline at 1-888-RADON10 (1-888-723-6610) or visit the Nevada Radon Education Program website at www.RadonNV.com. Cooperative Extension, the EPA and the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health urge all Nevadans to test their homes for radon.
