Nevada State Police identify northern California man who died in I-80 crash in Fernley
Nevada State Police has identified a Northern California man who died in a fatal crash last month on I-80 in Fernley.
Joshua Fitzgerald, a 31-year-old man from Mount Shasta, Calif., died from injuries from the crash that happened April 16. He died later on April 24, according to Nevada State Police, Highway Patrol Division.
The preliminary investigation indicates that a gray 2013 Dodge Ram was traveling eastbound on the IR80 in the far left (number one) travel lane near Mile Marker 53.
The driver of the Dodge Ram steered to the right causing the Dodge to travel from the number one travel lane through the number two travel lane. The Dodge overturned multiple times and came to rest on its roof between the two travel lanes.
An orange 2024 Freight-liner towing an enclosed trailer was traveling eastbound on IR80 near mile marker 53 in the number two travel lane.
The Freightliner attempted to avoid the overturned Dodge by braking and left steering. The front right of the Freightliner struck the side of the Dodge. The Dodge rotated clockwise and came to rest on its roof facing southbound in the right shoulder dirt area. The Freightliner came to rest in the far left (number one) travel lane.
The driver of the Dodge Ram, Joshua Fitzgerald, was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries. Fitzgerald died of his injuries on April 24, 2024.
Nevada State Police Highway Patrol Northern Command West M.I.R.T (Multidisciplinary Investigation and Reconstruction Team) is investigating this crash.
