Heading into the Veterans Day weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next four days. Events include live comedy, art and heater, multiple holiday craft fairs around Carson City and Carson Valley as well as several Veterans Day ceremonies and offers of gratitude to vets and active duty members of the U.S. military on Monday. The first week of November marches along with sunshine to continue into the foreseeable future. Events ahead for this Thursday include a regular meeting of the Carson City Board of Supervisors, a Mammovan stop at Nevada Health Centers, a Muscle Powered afternoon hike, and an evening with local artist Rebecca Fox at Artsy Fartsy Gallery. Going into the middle of the work week we can expect sunny skies with highs in the upper 60s. Events around the capital city Wednesday, Nov. 6 include gallery showings, a Veterans Day assembly at Sierra Lutheran High School, the first "Get Fit with Fight Camp" at Yaple's Ballroom, a presentation, "Nevada’s Ancient Rock Art: Art for All Times" hosted by Capital City Arts Initiative, storytelling at the Carson City Library and more.

Settling into the week as we head into Tuesday, Nov. 5, activities around the capital city include a morning walk and evening hike with Muscle Powered, a Salvation Army holiday job fair, plus a grant workshop through the Nevada Arts Council, an evening showing of the 1951 film "An American in Paris" hosted by the Carson City Classic Cinema Club, pole fitness and swing dance lessons at Yaple's Ballroom and more.

Looking for a date night idea? Want a night out with the friends! Grab the family and Swing on by Yapel's Ballroom! Come to our Swing Dancing Class. It is the best! It's great physical activity, great music, an easy going style that can help you connect with a partner easily. This is also a great style if you don't have a partner.

When you come to class, single guys and gals rotate so that they get a chance to try the swing moves with a partner. If you bring a partner to class, you have the choice to rotate or stick with your partner!

What is Fight Camp? It is a mix of martial art drills, acrobatic conditioning, circus conditioning and boot camp style circuit. Fight camp is excellent for any athlete looking to cross train to up their game, or for the family wanting to stay fit and have fun at the same time. 3 classes a week offered! Shane Trotter, a Carson City native, won the 30-39 age group at the 24 hour World Time Trial Championships held this weekend at Borrego Springs, Calif. People come from all over the world to race for 24 hours.

A warmup is in the forecast this week as we head into Monday, Nov. 4, 2019. Expect sunny skies with daytime highs in the upper 60s. But you'll want to bundle up after the sun sets as night time temperatures will be in the low 30s. Activities Monday include a lunch discussion with Nevada Appeal columnist Guy Farmer, the first of free Monday yoga classes offered through Partnership Carson City, art showings, West Coast swing dancing and more.

Fall is bulb planting time. Most people are familiar with the basic bulbs such as daffodils and tulips, but what about some of the plants commonly called bulbs that are actually corms, rhizomes, tubers or tuberous roots? All of these terms refer to the specialized underground structures that are storage organs for many of our spring blooming plants.

The 2019 season for CHS girls golf was a great experience for everyone on the team. This year, the team was comprised of five girls: Karen Beglin, Sophia Taggart, Karrina Ferris, Brooke Gudmundson, myself, and our coaches, Wade Greenlee and Jack Butler.

Anyone is welcome to join Partnership Carson City for its free Wellness Yoga series, beginning Monday, Nov 4 at 5:15 p.m. for one hour at the Partnership office, 1925 N. Carson St.

“All ages, genders — absolutely anyone is encouraged to come and take a physical and mental break with us,” said Hannah McDonald, Executive Director of Partnership Carson City. “It’s a free, alternative way to take some time for yourself. We want participants to walk away achieving more mindfulness, to de-stress and manage pain and to experience an improved outlook.”

Why would someone leave a comfortable life and go to a disaster zone?

“Well, it is a good question! Maybe one of the answers is that what keeps my life comfortable, is knowing that when I have the opportunity to help others, I will do it. If I had not gone, I think I would not have felt comfortable with my life, sitting down and doing nothing” Lior Singer answered.

Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak and First Lady Kathy took some time to visit and read to first grade students Tuesday at Empire Elementary School in Carson City.

Going into the eve of Halloween, teeth will be chattering as the weather calls for sunny skies but with a chill in the air and daytime temperatures in the upper 40s around the capital city. Events around town Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2019 include a Halloween costume walk at Riverview Park in Carson City, a "trick or trunk" event in Dayton, art showings, storytelling at the Carson City Library and more.

We're days away from our celebration of statehood and the weather around the capital city couldn't be more, well, Nevada-like with daytime highs near 70 and sunny skies. Carson City area activities ahead for Wednesday, Oct. 23 feature an economic roundup presented by the Northern Nevada Development Authority at Casino Fandango, Carson Tahoe's annual "Spooktacular" family event, Firehouse Subs will host our local Search and Rescue for a dinner fundraiser; Sierra Nevada Journeys and Nature Conservancy will present family STEM night in Genoa, plus art showings and more. Healing Qigong Part 1: A 6-week Qigong series will be offered Nov. 7 through Dec. 19 by instructor Deborah Stevenson at Carson City Yoga.

This relaxing, six-week qigong series promotes balance and renewal, perfect for this holiday season. Healing Qigong Part 1 consists of ten easy movements with an emphasis on gathering “chi” from the universe and learning how to move energy throughout the body.

The movements will be broken down step by step and each class in the series will build upon the previous one.

The results of the Carson High Schol HOSA Future Health Professionals career display winners are in, and the 1st Place winners are Faith Luis and Ava Ponczoch, 2nd Place are Millie Arroyo and Julia Kaiser, and 3rd Place winners are Brooklyn Robertson and Nick Batien.

Events locally include a ribbon cutting and outdoor moving showing at the new Schulz Ranch Park, workshops, a women's safety meeting, a pumpkin patch for kids at Carson Mall, plus art showings and public talks. The Carson City School District is seeking four applications from parents to serve as board members on the district’s Family Life Committee. Appointment as a member of the committee shall be for an initial term of three years.

The Nevada Highway Patrol and other Nevada law enforcement agencies participating in Joining Forces will be combining resources from Oct. 18 through Nov. 4, 2019 to apprehend impaired drivers.
