Animal lovers can also head to Carson Catalina Apartments for a rummage sale that benefits the Carson Tahoe SPCA. The Carson City Sheriff's Office young Explorers will host a fundraising car wash; The Marine Corp League can be found at the north Carson Walmart; half of the donations received will go to Deputy Howell’s family fund. And don’t miss out on the drought-friendly water balloon ice bucket challenge raising funds for ALS at Butler Meats on Sunday.

A brand new science program designed for all ages comes to the Nevada State Museum, Carson City’s Family Fun Saturdays program from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., this Saturday, March 14.

“Desert Adaptations,” introduces visitors to plants and animals that survive in the harsh region, including the kangaroo rat, burrowing owl, desert tortoise, antelope squirrel, creosote bush, cacti and succulents.

Nevada elementary students invited to choose third Sesquicentennial medallion design

Carson City, Nev. – In honor of Nevada’s 150th birthday, the Nevada Sesquicentennial Commission invites all elementary age children in Nevada to participate in choosing the design elements for the third Sesquicentennial medallion.

The medallion, third of four in the Sesquicentennial series being produced throughout the year, will feature the winning design elements as chosen by Nevada students. Votes must be submitted to Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki’s office no later than Wednesday, April 30, 2014.

Amodei pushes bill to speed public land transfers

Nevada Congressman Mark Amodei announced Wednesday the re-introduction of his "Small Lands Tracts Conveyance Act" (H.R. 1633) to accelerate the process for transferring small parcels of federal land to local communities.

In western states, straightforward, non-controversial public land sales to decrease the vast federal inventory and promote local control can take more than a decade to complete. While Amodei believes there should be scrutiny for any sale, he cites the bureaucratic regulatory maze and slow legislative process as the main culprits in dragging out the transfers.
