High school students

Carson Online, the Carson City School District’s online education program, was piloted at Pioneer High School in 2009. It has become a very successful online credit option for students in CCSD that has helped change culture, provide technological support, and has helped raise the graduation rate in our district. During the last school year, online options assisted over 970 students.

August 26th St. Mary's Art Center will host our Summer Art Reception, featuring beautiful works by amazing artists and artisans. Sandy Imperatori, Anne Leong, Sharon Leong, Dayton High School Scholastic Art Award Winners, Mimi Patrick, Casey Clark, Grey Wolf Leather Works, Cosmic Copper, Bonnie Kennedy, Malissa Sparks, Anna Smith and Pura Vida Sierras Art.

Dayton Township Kiwanis is in the planning stages of re-chartering a Key Club at Dayton High School this fall and invites parents of and students attending DHS to learn more about this at its monthly meeting, Wednesday, Aug. 2, at 6:30 p.m. at Dayton Senior Center.

More than a dozen state agencies throughout Nevada are taking advantage of a unique program allowing high school students with disabilities to obtain work experience by serving as interns.

Eight MIT and Harvard students are biking across the country to teach hands-on engineering workshops to students in select locations, including a stop at the Carson City Library. The team of students will bike across the United States in collaboration with edX and Teach for America as part of an effort to rethink STEM education.

Individuals may enter the Computer Information Technology program at Western Nevada College with the single-minded goal of creating a video game. Or maybe they want to help a company make better use of their network of computers.

The monthly Mile High Jazz Band show moves from Comma Coffee to the stage in McFadden Plaza, so it’s a free poetry and jazz show for all. Take a tour of the Stewart Indian School as part of today’s Parks and Rec Easy Walk. The historic site will be bustling with the annual Father’s Day Pow Wow come Friday.

Kira Costarella, a Douglas High School senior, is a Delegate to the Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Lowell, MA on June 25-­27, 2017. The Congress is an honors-only program for high school students who want to become physicians or go into medical research fields.

As the thermometer approaches 90, remind yourself that snow fell a few weeks ago and the heat is well overdue. We bypassed spring and lept right into summer. Enjoy a bluesy morning in Silver City as local musician, Mylo McCormick, takes the stage for a free acoustic concert. Bad man, John Wayne, tussles with an angel at tonight’s Classic Cinema Club offering at the Brewery Arts Center. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a friend on today’s Conditioning Hike up Goni with Muscle Powered.

Just a few days left, and the school year will over. Scope out one of Carson City’s neighborhood parks during today’s Easy Walk or participate in something a little more strenuous as Muscle Powered tackles Prison Hill, off Snyder. Kids are encouraged to wear their comfy clothes and bring a favorite stuffed animal during the Carson Library’s weekly Pajama Story Time. The Deputy Howell Memorial Music Festival is quickly approaching, so all volunteers will need to attend tonight’s planning meeting at Harley Davidson.

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval visited the campus of Western Nevada College in Carson City on Wednesday and signed two education measures into law.

Today has all the makings of a great day. Have lunch with the Chamber of Commerce and speaker Caren Roblin will teach you about the good, bad, and ugly sides of social media. Meet artists Gail Rappa and Elaine Parks at the Nevada Arts Council this evening. A reception in honor of their shared exhibit begins at 5 p.m. Ladies are invited to join the weekly Muscle Powered bike ride in Ash Canyon, just don’t forget your helmet and some sunscreen. Let the students of Carson High Musical Theater entertain you during their last concert of the year; general admission is only $4.00.

Western Nevada College is graduating one of its largest classes ever, with 551 students graduating with 592 degrees and certificates during a commencement ceremony today, Monday, May 22 at the Marv Teixeira Pavilion in Carson City.

We’ve reached the mid-point of May, which puts summer just around the corner. I suspect there are plenty of students, and teachers too, that are counting down the days. The Carson High HOSA team is headed to their National Conference soon, and lunch or dinner at Chili’s will help get them there, just mention fundraiser to the server. We also have a T-Shirt fundraiser today at Firehouse Subs and Battle Born Ammunition & Firearms, LLC. The fundraiser is for Makayla Warner who is battling a rare kidney disease.

TUESDAY:

Sunny days, sweeping the clouds away. On my way to where the air is sweet. I can tell you where to find some fun, down on Carson Street. Mile High Jazz Band at Comma Coffee is the hot ticket tonight. Such a beautiful day in store, they’ll probably be in the courtyard. Our rivers and reservoirs are filled to the brim: if you ever wanted to learn more about fly-fishing, this is probably a good time for it. The Carson City Fly Fishing Club meets monthly at the Carson City Airport and is a perfect choice for those who already love or are curious about the sport.

TUESDAY:

On Saturday, April 29, Pioneer High School students danced the night away at their prom. The event took place in the 1864 Grand Ballroom located on the second floor of the Brewery Arts Center.

Happy Tuesday, Carson City. The valley is abuzz in blooming flowers and happenings. Tag along with one of the guided planned walks today; the afternoon one will prove more challenging, but perfect for getting ready for summer. The Carson City Classic Cinema Club showcases a different film each month: catch Bette Davis in ‘Of Human Bondage’ tonight at the BAC’s Performance Hall. Even more awaits if you keep reading, including Penguin Taco Tuesday at Westside Pour House.

As the week rolls along, it’s easy to get excited about the weekend. Genoa’s Cowboy Festival takes over the tiny town with music, poetry, artisans, food, and fun and the Comstock hills will roar to life with motorbikes during the annual Virginia City Grand Prix. While you’re waiting, enjoy a jaunt with Muscle Powered along the Carson River or take an Easy Walk to the Pioneer Cemetery. Tonight, songstress Canyon White will take the stage at Living the Good Life.

TUESDAY:

Pioneer High School students visited the Nevada Art Museum and the Stremmel Art Gallery to get a broader awareness of professional works art in Reno this week. These type of field trips are designed and encouraged to help build background knowledge and can help inspire students with hidden artistic talent just waiting to be discovered.

Carson High School students worked tirelessly over the previous eight months to prepare for Carson City community volunteers, many of them CHS graduates who completed the Senior Project themselves, to evaluate both their portfolios and their speeches to be delivered Saturday.

Join Pioneer High School students and Mr. Paul Lorion at their second annual spring art show at the Brewery Arts Center this Friday, April 21, 2017, during an open reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Student work will include paintings, drawings and ceramic pieces that illustrate the creativity of the Pioneer Panther student body.

The Carson Visitor’s Center has put together a great art walk pamphlet that helps you explore our downtown culture. The Legislature is home to a few rotating galleries; you’ll find lots of local art at the Brewery Arts Center; and Capital City Arts Initiative sponsors shows at the Courthouse, Community Center and in the Community Development building by City Hall. Whether you prefer indoors or outdoors activities, today has something to offer.

In the Fall of 2015, I was teaching to a group of high school students on the topic of creativity and innovation in entrepreneurship. As examples, I shared stories about the imaginative minds of George Lucas and Steve Jobs.

It’s on to the “Final Four” for the Western Nevada College Jump Start program. WNC’s dual-credit academic program has been recognized as a national semifinalist for the 2017 ACT College & Career Readiness Campaign, which celebrates individual and organizational efforts to advance college and career readiness for all.

Spring is what you make of it. It’s not going to be that warm today, but it’ll be dry, so embrace the day. Tuesdays are for hiking and biking in Carson. The morning easy walk will take you from Mills Park to the Capitol and the afternoon conditioning hike will give you well-deserved views from C-Hill. Now that we’ve warmed up some, the Tuesday evening ladies’ ride in Ash Canyon has started up again: don’t forget your helmet. Congratulations to Mile High Jazz Band for 16 years of monthly concerts at Comma Coffee. Enjoy a night of great music, yummy drinks, and a birthday cake to celebrate.

The support received from the community of Carson City is enough to make people from all over the country want to relocate. Former students know there are no special funds available for high school clubs to organize a prom or enjoy interscholastic competition.

You’ll want to read today’s list, fun stuff all over and something for everyone. Psst… Daytonites… Your kids are on spring break right now, and Carson has some great ways to keep them entertained. Younger ones will enjoy a trip to the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada; Tuesdays feature a story and craft activity that’s included with admission. A quick trip to the Galaxy Theater website gets you a rewards card good for Tuesday discount tickets. The Deputy Howell Memorial Musical Festival is holding a volunteer organization meeting tonight at Battle Born Harley.

Living on his own since he was 17 years old, Adrian Barrera has learned a number of skills that have helped him personally, but at the same time has developed selfless human qualities that have enriched his young life.

Kasidey Lewis, 15, builds a bird house during a Career and Technical Education tour at Western Nevada College in Carson City, Nev., on Thursday, March 30. Nearly 40 students from Silver Stage High School explored the WNC construction management and manufacturing programs. Participants also learned about Jump Start which allows students to earn high school and college credits at the same time.

It seems like overnight the crabapples have exploded into bloom. Take advantage of a beautiful day by joining one of the walks organized every Tuesday. An easy walk with Parks and Rec will take you along a portion of the Mexican Ditch Trail today. The Muscle Powered walk in early evening is more strenuous. Fathers will want to get moving if they plan on taking their daughter to the Carson High Father Daughter Dance this Friday.
