Carson City events for Monday, Jan. 6

Heading into Monday and moving forward to the first full week of 2020 we're looking at mostly sunny skies and a daytime high near 50. Activities lined include the Winter Reading Challenge at the Carson City Library, organizers of the Pete Buttigieg presidential campaign will give a presentation, art activities, plus a free yoga class at the Community Center and more. Carson City Library's 2020 Winter Reading Challenge now underway

As we get a start on 2020, many have made it a New Year's resolution to read more books. Carson City Library has made it easier for those hoping to get a solid footing on their pledges and is offering prizes to boot as part of its 2020 Winter Reading Challenge.

Senator Square: Fellowship of Christian Athletes thanks Carson City community for support

Not only did the nonprofit organization Fellowship of Christian Athletes open their Christmas tree lot Nov. 24 to raise funds for their organization’s events and outreaches, they also supported other organizations and individuals by giving away 350 Angel Tree Christmas stockings and Christmas trees to Carson City children and families in need, and they also partnered with Sierra Lutheran High School to donate 75 trees to the US Marines at the Warfare Training Center in Coleville, Calif.

Original owners of 'The Basil' are back at the renowned Carson City restaurant after funding school in Thailand

Carson City's The Basil momentarily changed hands while undergoing a corporation change, but now, original owners Bob and Nan Watanar, who also serves as head chef, are back in the kitchen of the beloved Thai restaurant.

After spending thirty years creating delicious traditional Thai food on Carson Street, Bob and Nan wanted to pay forward their hard work and good fortune to those in need.

Bob and Nan set off for Bangkok, where they funded a school for abused children who were being looked after by Nuns. They helped create a commercial kitchen at the school, where the children are now learning how to run their own restaurants.

Nevada Humanities to Host Informational Grant Meetings in Reno, Henderson, Las Vegas, and Elko

Nevada Humanities will hold a series of free informational grant meetings in Henderson, Las Vegas, Reno, and Elko in January 2020. These meetings are open to anyone interested in learning more about applying for project grant funding from Nevada Humanities.

Nevada Humanities offers grants of up to $5,000 to nonprofit organizations and government entities, such as libraries and schools, to fund public and educational programs in the humanities.

Carson City's Empire Elementary hosts second STEM Parent Night

CARSON CITY — Empire Elementary School hosted the second of four Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Parent Nights Tuesday, Dec. 17. More than 250 participants gathered last night to experience fun hands-on experiments and student-showcased STEM projects, which were taught throughout the last quarter of activities and learning.

Posada Event at Mark Twain Elementary to Increase Family Involvement

Carson City, Nev. (Dec. 13, 2019) — Administrators and educators at Carson City’s Mark Twain Elementary School will host Posada 2019, Tuesday, Dec. 17, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. The event, open to all students and families, is part of the English Second Language (ESL) Department’s iCan Initiative designed to increase parent and family involvement for students and to help reinforce and extend learning taught during regular classroom instruction. It will include piñatas, face painting, traditional Hispanic holiday food and music, family activities, photos and more.

Christmas Food Drive, Homestead Holidays at Silver Saddle Ranch, Santa Train rides and more: Carson City region readies for busy weekend

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the KTVN Share Your Christmas Food Drive at the Governor's Mansion in Carson City and at Minden's Carson Valley Inn, Homestead Holidays at the Silver Saddle Ranch and more. The Polar Express Train Rides are sold out for the rest of the year, but Santa Train express rides are steaming up at the Nevada State Railroad Museum over the weekend. Read on for details.

With activities lining up around the capital city through the weekend, Thursday events around the region include a meeting of the Healthy Communities Coalition in Silver Springs, an afternoon hike hosted by Muscle Powered, and a Carson City CASA volunteer information hour and training seminar. Along the music front, CHS Band will host its winter concert at the Carson City Community Center and our own local country music star and Nashville recording artist Art Mulcahy will be at Jimmy G's. Carson City School District, trustees haul in awards at 2019 NASB Conference

The Carson City School District was a point of highlight at the Nevada Association of School Boards annual conference in Reno, the weekend prior to Thanksgiving. The school district and trustees hauled in nearly a quarter of all the awards (4 out of 19) among the 17 districts statewide.
