The Sacred Arts of Tibet Tour has brought the monks of the Gaden Shartse Phukhang Monastery back to the Brewery Arts Center; today they’ll perform a tea offering and give a presentation on happiness. Negroni week kicks off today at the Firkin and Fox, but several local bars are participating in this fundraiser.

Whoo-hoo Wednesday. June First brings the inaugural Wednesday Evening Farmers Market to downtown. Look for it at Third Street after 4 p.m. The Battle of the Badges Blood Drive is at the Community Center: the Sheriff’s Office vs. the Fire Department. Help Comma Coffee welcome a new artist to their Backseat Gallery this evening: every first Wednesday you can a attend their artist reception. Sing a song for summer at Crossroads: J and M Productions hosts karaoke tonight.

Today we remember those who have fallen while defending our country. The Historic Stewart Cemetery on Snyder will feature a ceremony at 10 a.m. Lone Mountain Cemetery hosts a ceremony at 1 p.m. and the public is invited to help remove the several hundred flags that were placed on the graves of veterans at 4 p.m. Dayton Cemetery holds their service at 9 a.m. Enjoy a free bar-be-que at Evergreen Gene’s. Midnight Madness has descended upon the valley, bringing with it a 72 hour softball tournament at Centennial Park. Don’t be surprised to see more cyclists on the road: an unofficial pre-ride for Epic Rides is this weekend. Head to the Nevada State Railroad Museum to see the Glenbrook all steamed up. Spring fever is upon many of us, probably worst of all among the school kids. Let the Carson High School bands and theater program show off their stuff one last time before the end of the year; you'll find them at the Community Center at 7 p.m. It's also the time of year that sees more walkers and bicyclists on our sidewalks and roadways. Join Muscle Powered this evening as they participate in the 13th Annual Ride of Silence to remember those who have been hurt or killed while riding on public streets.

What a weekend. As the days get longer, the whole valley bustles. Monday has returned, but no fear, there is still fun to be found. Karaoke at Firkin and Fox is a great way to start off the week. Grab your dancing shoes and head to El Charro to learn some new moves with the High Sierra Swing Dance Club. Grab the kids for a night of board games at Nerdvana. For games meant for a more adult audience, the Carson Cigar Company hosts a weekly game night with drink specials for the players.

Throw a little sunshine my way and I start thinking about Lake Tahoe. Pints and Paddles, the happy hour cruise aboard the M.S. Dixie, has returned to Zephyr Cove. Break up the workday with a stroll along the Wellness Trail: the Wednesday walkers begin at noon if you’d like company. Living the Good Life features great food, fun bartenders, and tonight a Jazz Jam lead by Rocky and Judith. Sassafras lives up to its Eclectic Food Joint reputation again: The Moody Motion Tour featuring Cryptic Wisdom, Whiteout, and Jack The Ripper hits the stage tonight.

Today’s sky has something special going on. A transition of Mercury across the sun occurs from sunrise until about noon. For the Star Wars Aficionados, then you’ll want to head to the Carson Library or to Downtown Minden for light sabers and costume parties. Art lovers will find a new exhibit to celebrate at Comma Coffee. Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint has the Junebugs performing tonight; this is the fun you’re looking for.

May day has come and gone, but just barely. This is my favorite time of year in Carson City: blooming flowers, warmer days, and the return of summertime activities. The Historic Carson Scavenger Hunt begins today, so head downtown and look for the unique features that make the buildings one of a kind. Mondays are perfect for getting out and starting the week off with some swing dancing with our local club, the High Sierra Swing Dancers. Firkin and Fox is a great place for food and drink, but tonight you can go and sing some songs with karaoke leaders J and M Productions.

What to do on a Wednesday? The tiny little town of Silver City on the way to Virginia City has an amazing arts community: resident artist Scott MacLeod has his final sculpture workshop this afternoon: the found object ship he’s building is incredible. Feed your soul and your belly with music and great food at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint or Living the Good Life. Sing your heart out with J and M Productions at Crossroads Lounge’s karaoke night. Let some classic cinema into your life with a big screen viewing of ‘On the Waterfront’ at the Galaxy Theater.

Are you ready for Monday? Grab the kids and hit the lanes for some Family Day bowling at Carson Lanes. Walking with ponies at the Littlest Things if fun for all ages. El Charro Avita is the place to be tonight; High Sierra Swing Dance Club hosts their weekly ‘night out,’ and will teach you something new before the open dancing begins. Downtown may be dusty, but the businesses along Carson Street still need our love. Check out karaoke at the Firkin and Fox, and don’t forget to peruse their new menu that debuts today.

All day long, a fundraiser for Maya Morrison is happening at Firkin and Fox, but head over between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to take advantage of their very first Whiskey Wednesday.

Monday has returned, the kids head back to school, and the weather is gorgeous. Add a dose of beautiful to your day with a visit to an art Gallery. You’ll find a new exhibit in the Main Gallery at Western Nevada College. Carson City officials will be on hand today at the Community Center to answer questions and explain what is on the budget for the upcoming fiscal year. While you’re there, take a good gander at the Great Basin Native Artists show on display in the Sierra Room.

Spring has sprung. Days getting longer, flowers blooming, and now Easter weekend is upon us. Egg hunts, brunches, and even a parade are all part of the fun. Take a look at this weekend’s event summary for family fun, live music, and much more.

Easter bonnets, baskets, eggs, and bunnies are about to descend, and here is a sneak peek at where to find the fun. Most all of the egg hunts are free, but I've made sure to include an entry price if one exists.

Celebrate Easter at the Nevada State Railroad Museum (10am-4pm; Storytime at 11am; special crafts and egg hunt; $6 adults, children free)

Here comes Peter Cottontail, hopping down Medical Parkway. The annual Eggstravaganza returns to the Carson Tahoe Medical Center this afternoon with fun for kids of all ages. You’ll find Moses parting the Red Sea on the big screen, as The Ten Commandments makes its way to the Galaxy Theater as part of their Classic Movie Series. City Manager, Nick Marano, is the featured speaker at the monthly ‘Soup’s On’ Luncheon sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. Enjoy the evening with a Jazz Jam at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint or karaoke at Crossroads Lounge.

Springtime means spring break for the students at Western Nevada College, and it begins today. A chance to catch up on homework, catch your breath, and catch some of the fun stuff around town. Enjoy ladies night at Remedy’s Bar. Wander through some of the great art exhibits throughout town. Sing your heart out at Firkin and Fox’s karaoke night. However you spend the day, just rejoice that they are finally getting longer.

Slow down, you move too fast. You’ve got to make the moment last. Today is Nevada Moves Day as part of Nevada Moves week. Be aware of the kids making their way to school, whether it be on foot, by bike, scooter, or skateboard. A walk along the Wellness Trail is a good way to break up the work week. Crossroads Lounge on Winne Lane is under new ownership and has just brought karaoke favorites ‘J and M Productions’ onboard Wednesday nights. Jazz and so much more is on the menu at Living the Good Life: drinks, dinner, and a show are waiting.

It is Pi Day, so we celebrate the ratio of the circumference of a circle in relation to its diameter. This year, if we round out the never-ending number to just six digits, we get today’s date: 3.1416. For those with fewer attachments to mathematical constants, it’s still a great reason to enjoy a piece of pie. Check out the selection that Comma Coffee has whipped up for the occasion. Fathers and daughters will want to make note of the Second Annual Father-Daughter Dance at Carson High School. Tickets for the April 8 event are on sale now, just head to Carson High from 2 p.m.-4 p.m.

We’re getting there: it will be the weekend again in just a few short days. While you’re waiting, embrace Wednesday and what it offers. Live music will make dinner taste even better with Lynne and Jimmy at Living the Good Life or Terri and Craig at Glen Eagles. The Boys and Girls Club continues its celebration with the BCG Olympics. Crossroads Lounge is excited to begin its new karaoke night with J and M Production’s over 60 thousand songs to choose from.

A 14-year-old Carson High School student recounted climbing up in her great-grandfather’s bathroom to change a lightbulb. She looked over at the top of the medicine cabinet where she saw a spoon and lighter hidden.

That’s when she learned that both of her uncles had a heroin addiction.

“They both abused heroin and prescription drugs,” she said. “They would take over my great-grandpa’s apartment. They would steal from him and they would steal his medicines.”
It was a terrible realization for her.
