Comment on City Supervisors turn down Silver State High School’s plans for new site at Goni and Old Hot Springs by sknight
Just to correct some points in the article: Steve Knight is not the owner but is the Executive DIrector/Superintendent/Principal of Silver State Schools, a 7-12 grade FREE PUBLIC Charter school. The Nevada taxpayers are the owners as with any public school. However, there is one bigger benifit to the taxpayer, charter schools can not request bonds as district public schools can and of course public schools can not be operated for profit. District schools and charter schools are both supported by payments from the Distributive School Account (DSA) based on the number of students that attend. DSA is derived from Nevada tax payers and local property taxes and distributed to all public schools through the Nevada Plan formula. Private schools do have owners and do not receive DSA funds. Many Nevada charter schools do have Education Managament Organizations (EMO) that operate the school for a for profit fee. Silver State is locally controlled by our sponsors the elected State School Board and Administered by a licensed administrator, Steve Knight and has its own school board. Silver State does not have any EMO or any other outside agency running the school nor recieving any money from the school.
It is disappointing that Carson City Board of Supervisors did not approve the request for final approval for the location of the school near the Carson airport. As one of our main areas of curriculum is Aerospace and technology, our location near an airport is vital. Hopefully, we can find a more receptive location for this high performing school of 600 students and our $14 million dollar project. As a reminder, the taxpayer would not be burdened by the cost of the school as we have private investors that are dedicated to build this fine school that serves students from all the surrounding counties.
