Carson City Sheriff's Log: Man jailed for felony possession of a controlled substance

A 41-year-old Reno man was arrested Wednesday afternoon on felony possession of a controlled substance, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Rick Douglas Nichols was booked on one count of possession of controlled substance, dangerous drug without a prescription, after deputies discovered a prescription pill bottle during a traffic stop, the arrest report said.

According to the arrest report, deputies responded to a call just after 5 p.m. Wednesday about a person making threats to customers at a business in the 200 block of West Winnie Lane. Witnesses said the suspect stated he was going to shoot them.

One witness, who later dropped his statement off at the jail, reported the suspect threatened to come back with a gun and shoot everyone.

Prior to law enforcement's arrival, the suspect left the scene in his vehicle, and emergency dispatch provided a description of the suspect's vehicle, including the license plate number, to responding deputies.

Deputies located the vehicle and made a traffic stop in the 2000 block of N. Carson Street.

The arrest report states Nichols immediately got out of his vehicle upon being stopped and charged toward deputies. He ignored their commands to stop and return to his vehicle. However, Nichols did stop short of the deputies, and turned back toward his vehicle yelling loudly, the arrest report said.

But Nichols continued to disregard multiple commands from deputies to stop, and he was subsequently tased, the arrest report said.

The suspect told deputies he was being harassed at a business, causing him to yell at customers.

A search of the suspect's vehicle showed a prescription pill bottle prescribed to Nichols. But the pills inside the container were of multiple types and colors, the arrest report said.

In addition to the felony controlled substance charge, Nichols was also charged with misdemeanor harassment and obstructing/resisting law enforcement. Bail: $2,500.

In other arrests:
— A 19-year-old Carson City man and a 19-year-old Carson City woman were arrested Thursday night just after 10 p.m. in the 1300 block of Williard Lane on felony burglary charges.

Joseph Minh Tran and Celeste Genessy Diaz were both taken into custody and booked in the Carson City Jail after deputies responded to a call from a 15-year-old juvenile who reported breaking and entering by his adult sister (Diaz) and her boyfriend (Tran).

The juvenile was also the victim in an earlier domestic battery call at the same location, where deputies had documented a bite mark and multiple lacerations to the victim's body.

According to the arrest report, Diaz, who did not live at the Williard Lane residence, had originally arrived and demanded the return of her child. Diaz had left her child in the care of her mother, the victim told deputies, and neither the mother nor the child were home at the time Diaz and Tran arrived.

The arrest report shows Diaz entered the residence forcefully and looked around for her child. The victim reported that he and Diaz got into a physical altercation, at which point the victim received bite and laceration injuries to his body. Diaz then called Tran into the residence and the latter "body slammed" the juvenile victim onto the ground, the arrest report states. The suspects then left the scene.

However, dispatch notified deputies a half hour later that the suspects had returned to the Williard Lane residence, and the victim reported that Diaz was trying to break into the residence. She later admitted to breaking a side window of the residence in an attempt to gain entry, the arrest report showed.

In addition to the burglary charge, Diaz was also charged with misdemeanor property destruction. Her bail is set at $20,000. Tran's bail is also set at $20,000.

— A 45-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Wednesday morning at 9:28 a.m. in the 700 block of Old Hot Springs Road on charges of domestic battery, the arrest report shows.

According to the arrest report, deputies were called to a residence on Old Hot Springs Road for a loud domestic dispute between a couple that was overheard by emergency dispatch due to an open 911 line.

The loud argument still ensued when deputies arrived on scene, and the responding officers could hear the shouting from the other side of the courtyard outside of the residence. They were able to overhear a male say "You hit me, I have blood all over my arm," and a female respond, "If the cops show up, I'm going to lie."

The argument stopped when deputies made contact with the couple. Inside the residence, deputies found several pieces of a broken beeer bottle and a broken glass on the floor, the report said.

The male victim was found to have several fresh superficial cuts on his right arm, received when the woman flicked a towel in his direction, hitting a bottle and a glass on the table, the victim reported to deputies. The shards of broken glass caused the wounds to the victim's arm, the report said.

The woman was booked into the Carson City Jail on $3,000 bail.

— A 23-year-old South Lake Tahoe, CA, man was booked into the Carson City Jail Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. on a misdemeanor outstanding contempt of court warrant issued by the Carson City Justice Court. The man had been transported by Douglas County Sheriff's deputies to the Carson City Jail. Bail: $3,000.

— A 59-year-old Carson City man was arrested Thursday afternoon at 1:37 p.m. in the 1600 block of Medical Parkway on a misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge, the arret report shows.

According to the arrest report, the man was being held for civil protective custody due to a high level of alcoholic intoxication. The man began yelling, cursing, and kicking walls prior to deputies' arrival. Sheriff's deputies then placed him under arrest and transported him to the Carson City Jail, where he was booked on $150 bail.

— A 45-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Thursday afternoon at 5:06 p.m. in the 1800 block of N. Division Street for misdemeanor driving under the influence, her first offense, the arrest report shows.

According to the arrest report, a witness observed the suspect stumbling out of a liquor store on the way to getting in her vehicle and driving away. The suspect was also observed pulling her vehicle into a residence driveway and running it into a garage door.

The responding deputy arrived at the residence and made contact with the suspect, who the officer described as having the strong odor of alcohol on her. The deputy also described the suspect as having red, watery, blood-shot eyes and slow, slurred, thick speech. She was observed to stumble while in her residence as well.

The report shows the suspect refused field sobriety testing. A second deputy assisted in the arrest, the report said, because the woman's balance was poor and she had difficulty standing. She was then transported to and booked in the Carson City Jail with bail set at $1,000.

— A Carson City man was arrested Thursday night at 10:04 p.m. in the 2000 block of Airport Road for misdemeanor obstructing an officer and violation of bail conditions, the arrest report shows.

According to the arrest report, deputies were called to the area of Airport Road and Champion Drive for a welfare check at a residence. Upon arrival, deputies were met by the suspect, who proceeded to follow deputies around the residence. The suspect did not live at the residence, and he was reported to have walked into house through the south door during the investigation, the arrest report shows.

The suspect failed to comply with multiple requests by deputies to return to his vehicle. At that point, he was arrested for obstruction and transported to the Carson City Jail.

During transport to the jail, dispatch advised deputies that the suspect was under the supervision of the Dept. of Alternative Sentencing with a no-alcohol clause.

Upon arrival at the jail, a preliminary breath test was administered and showed blood-alcohol levels elevated to 0.160. As this result was a violation of the suspect's bail conditions under alternative sentencing, he was charged with that misdemeanor offense as well. Bail: $3,000.

— A 20-year-old Carson City man was arrested Thursday night at 11:49 p.m. in the 300 block of S. Pratt on a misdemeanor outstanding traffic warrant out of Douglas County, the arrest report shows.

According to the arrest report, deputies were called to a residence on S. Pratt for a domestic dispute between a woman and her son. The dispute was verbal only, the report said.

A computer records check of the son, however, showed the outstanding warrant for a traffic violation issued by the East Fork Justice Court in Minden. The suspect was transported to the Carson City Jail, where he was booked on $616 bail.

— A 67-year-old Carson City man was arrested Thursday night at 10:50 p.m. in the area of Goni Road and Arrowhead Drive for misdemeanor driving under the influence, the arrest report shows. This was his first offense, the report said.

According to the arrest report, deputies responded to a call in the area of Roop Street and Winnie Lane about a reckless driver who was driving into oncoming traffic and failing to maintain his lane.

Deputies caught up with the vehicle on Sutro Terrace, and it was observed to have made a wide right turn driving into oncoming traffic over a double yellow line. The vehicle then swerved to the right and drove onto a raised curb before coming to a stop on the sidewalk, the report shows.

The driver was observed to have slurred speech, and red, watery, glazed eyes. He admitted to have consumed some alcohol.

He also had to hold onto the vehicle as it exited it to keep from falling, the report said.

The driver failed the field sobriety and preliminary breathalizer tests. He was placed into custody and transported to the Carson City Jail. Bail: $1,000.

— A 28-year-old Carson City man was arrested Thursday night at 11:24 p.m. in the area of Stanford Way and Woodside Drive for misdemeanor assault, obstructing an officer, and disorderly conduct, the arrest report shows.

According to the arrest report, the suspect was stopped by a sheriff's deputy in an area where multiple vehicle burglaries have occurred and was asked to identify himself. But the suspect refused, stating "I don't have to give you Gustopo fucks anything."

An additional unit was dispatched to the scene for back-up at that point. The suspect was informed by the deputy that he was being detained until his identity could be confirmed.

Another deputy arrived on scene, and when asked again to identify himself, the suspect became agitated. He raised his voice, moved his arms around, and turned toward one of the deputies. The other deputy attempted to grab the suspect's right arm, but the latter tensed up, balled his fists and bladed his stance.

The suspect then tried to turn with his left hand made into a fist, and the deputies tried to take control of both arms. The suspect began yelling, "I have PTSD you fucks!"

The suspect fought with deputies, who tried unsuccessfully to gain control of the former's arms. One of the deputies then placed the suspect in a bear hug and put him on the ground. The suspects arms and legs were eventually immobilized, but until after he tried to kick at the deputies.

The suspect was placed in hand-cuffs and searched. Deputies found a weapon made out of a sock and rocks, a device also known to be used to smash car windows in vehicle burglaries, the arrest report said. The search also discovered a box cutter.

The suspect complained of a broken arm and an injured left eye. An ambulance was initially called to the scene, but the suspect refused care. Deputies then transported him to the hospital, where he was examined and medically cleared without any injuries.

The suspect was transported to Carson City Jail without further incident and booked on $500 bail.
