"Slam Dunk"partnership between Silver State High School and City Parks and Recreation
A plan hatched between city parks and Silver State High School appears to be building momentum. The plan seeks to have the city give to the school what it needs (free land) in exchange for the school giving access to the Parks and Recreation what it needs (big new gymnasium and more soccer fields).
The city Parks and Recreation Commission is asking the Board of Supervisors to give Silver State High School ten acres of city land near the southwest corner of Centennial Park and in return the school will build a big new gym and soccer fields that the public will have full access to after hours and on weekends. No money changes hands and both get what they want.
Silver State High School administrator Steve Knight met with Parks and Recreation Director Roger Moellendorf right after Knight's plans for new school buildings near Goni and Old Hot Springs were turned down by city supervisors earlier this year.
Moellendorf suggested a win-win deal on the Centennial site to Knight and he liked it. The Parks and Recreation Commission gave it a "thumbs up" as well. The idea will be formerly presented to city supervisors next month. If approved, Silver State will have their new middle school and high school and the city will get its extra basketball and other indoor sports needs met along with more outdoor soccer capacity. If all goes according to plan it should all be up and running by late next year, just northwest of the lower Centennial ball fields.
