Easter weekend has officially begun, and on the docket today we have the Underwater Easter Egg Hunt, the Carson Mall Candy Walk, a wildflower walk through King’s Canyon, and more!

Here's what we've got going on today in Carson City:

— Bowling for a new kidney fundraiser set for April 20 Hi folks, can you help David? David Mickelsen in on dialysis and time is running out. He found a donor, but there is so much that David needs in order to get the new kidney. So we have planned a fundraiser for him. Come join us on Saturday, April 20, 2019 and enjoy some bowling at Gold West Casino in Carson City.

— Carson Mall Candy Walk Come and join us for our Easter Candy Walk! All kids must be accompanied by a parent. Please check in with the registration booth. We will have bags and a ticket for each store drawing!

— Carson City's Muscle Powered to take on portion of Carson River at next Trash Mob Muscle Powered will host its next Trash Mob cleanup in Carson City on Saturday, April 20 at East Silver Saddle Ranch. Volunteers will set out to do cleanup along the river between Sierra Vista Lane and the Carson River.

— Wildflower Walk Explore Nevada’s native wildflowers at one of the area’s most beautiful spots, Kings Canyon! Meet Saturday, April 20, 10 a.m. at Carlisle Court, and we'll hike up Kings Canyon and discuss local wildflower habitat and the importance of plant diversity. Make sure to come prepared for a moderately difficult, 2-hour hike.

— The Nevada State Railroad Museum is opening its doors Saturday and Sunday, April 20 - 21, for Egg Hunts, train rides, photos with Mr. Easter Bunny himself, and more. It's "all aboard" at the Nevada State Railroad Museumlocated at 2180 S Carson St. There will be train rides on the Edwards Motor Car and egg hunts, photos with the Easter Bunny and other activities for children to highlight the railroad museum’s second annual “Egg-stra Special Express." Festivities both days start at 10 a.m. with rides aboard the 1926 Edwards Motor Car. Museum admission is $6 for adults; free for children 17 and younger. Motor car prices are $4 for ages 12 and older; $2 for children 4-11 and free for children 3 and younger. The outdoor Easter egg hunts, held in the park at the Railroad Museum, are free and are divided by age groups. At 11 a.m., ages 1-4 participate (one adult per child is allowed in the egg area); while children 5 and older start their egg hunt at 1 p.m. Story time activities take place inside the Jacobsen Interpretive Center at the museum with sessions at noon and 2 p.m. Storytime Photography will be offering printed photos with the Easter Bunny for $10. Art activities for youngsters are available in the museum all day long.

— Customer Appreciation Day at Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery April 20 from 10 am to 5 pm it’s our customer appreciation day. 15 to 25 percent off silk scarves, pottery, artwork, furniture, and more.

— Nevada State Museum to celebrate 'Father of Carson City' with Abe Curry Day He’s got a street named after him and statue on the mall between the state capitol and Nevada Legislature. Now Abraham Curry, the Father of Carson City, is going to have a day of his own at the Nevada State Museum.

— Family Yoga classes offered at Carson City Yoga beginning April 20 Exploration! Playfulness! Bonding! A new Family Yoga class in Carson City begins April 20 and then is offered the third Saturday of the month. In this class, families with children (ages 4-12) are invited to come and explore various aspects of yogic practice together. There will be a variety of poses, songs and activities based around a monthly theme reflecting on a core element of yoga practice.

— Celebrate the Easter holiday weekend with friends and family at Western Nevada College (WNC). The Second Year Nursing Club at WNC and the National Student Nurses Association (NSNA) will host the annual Easter Fiesta at the Rotary Plaza on the Carson City campus. Highlights include a 1:00 p.m. egg scramble on John L. Harvey Field and an opportunity to have your picture taken with the Easter Bunny. There also will be face painting, a coloring contest, piñatas, limbo, musical chairs and more. Activity tickets are $1 each and $5 for 6. — Celebration of Life for Donna Curtis set for April 20 at Fuji Park There will be a "Celebration of the Life and Times of Donna Curtis" on Saturday, April 20, 2019 at the dog park at Fuji Park in Carson City. Curtis died Nov. 1, 2018. In 2013, Donna Curtis spearheaded the purchase of a memorial bench on behalf of Carson City Democratic Women in the new off-leash dog park at the west end of Fuji Park.

— Carson City’s Shoe Tree Brewing gets groovy with April 20 Reggae Music Festival Carson City's Shoe Tree Brewing Co. will be hosting a 4/20 reggae music festival on Saturday, April 20 featuring live bands, a new beer, vendors and more.

— Carson City Parks and Recreation to host Underwater Egg Hunt The Underwater Egg Hunt is back! Join Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space as they go on an egg hunt at the Carson City Aquatic Facility on Saturday, April 20. Some eggs will be floating on top of the pool, some will be at the bottom of the pool. Egg hunts will be separated by age group in various pools at the Carson Aquatic Facility. The event runs from 2 to 5 p.m. Registration is required in advance this year. You can register at www.carson.org/ccpr The event is free and open to children up to 12-years of age. Children 6 and under must be with a participating adult.

— Learn to make flowers out of books in time for Easter Once a book is read, it sits on a shelf and collects dust. Have you ever wanted to do something more with those old books? Join Debbie and Rachael Lambin, creators of "My Thousand Words," to learn to make beautiful art out of old books. This special springtime class will teach you to make a beautiful bouquet of flowers and a folded book to hold them. Use it to grace your table for Easter or decorate your home office!

— 'Reckless Envy' will be playing at the Casino Fandango from 7 p.m. to 11:45 p.m. Reckless Envy is a band located in Reno, NV and plays either as a trio or a five-piece band, covering favorites from ZZ top to Johnny Cash.

ONGOING:

— Student art show open at WNC’s Main Gallery at Carson City campus. Daily. The artistic talents of Western Nevada College students will be on display in the college art gallery for the next month. The 2019 Student Art Show will be shown through Wednesday, May 15 in the Bristlecone Building on WNC’s Carson City campus.The exhibit features juried artwork from WNC students who were enrolled in classes during the fall or are currently enrolled during the spring semester. Students will compete for first, second and third places in drawing, painting, collage, photography, graphic art, ceramics, sculpture and mixed media. Students will also have the opportunity to price and sell their artwork. WNC’s Main Gallery is located in the Bristlecone Building and is open to the public six days a week: Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

— Carson City art exhibition 'Creative Spark' features 32 area high school artists. The Capital City Arts Initiative hosts its exhibition, Creative Spark, at the Community Development Building, also known as the Brick, 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. Thirty-two students from Carson, Dayton, Douglas, and Pioneer high schools have work in the exhibit. The free exhibition is available to the public now through May 29, 2019, Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Creative Spark includes a wide variety of art media including ceramics, collage, drawing, painting, and photography that show the diversity of the students’ creativity.

— Paiute artist’s work displayed at Nevada Legislature. 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Native American artist Melissa Melero-Moose finds inspiration for her mixed media creations from the landscape and culture of the Northern Paiute of the Great Basin.
“Willows, tules, cattails, and pine nuts are all very important staples to the Paiute people, being sources of food, shelter, and implements made with artistic intention,” she said. “I consider these works to be a perspective of my tribe and culture through the eyes of a Native woman, mother and artist.” Melero-Moose’s work is featured in the exhibit, “Translating Paiute,” which went on display Monday, April 8 at the Nevada Arts Council’s Legislative eXhibition Series (LXS) Gallery inside the Nevada Legislative Building. 401 S Carson Street, Carson City.

Nevada Artists Association 'Spring has Sprung' show underway at the BAC in Carson City. 10 a.m. daily except Mondays. — Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: The Felt Works. Daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibition is free and open to the public Monday through Friday and will is on display now through May 3. Artist Svea Ferguson, based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, created her wall sculptures from common materials found primarily in domestic spaces. She uses vinyl and linoleum flooring materials designed to mimic the appearance of high-end options such as marble, granite, and hardwood at significantly lower costs. These flexible, faux veneers present physical qualities, which allow them to be easily manipulated by the hand, without the need for specialty tools or facilities. The CCAI Courthouse Gallery is located at 885 E Musser St., Carson City.

— Watercolor Exploration classes offered in March and April through WNC's Continuing Education. Whether you are a new or continuing watercolor student, learn to splash and play while discovering the expansive possibilities of watercolor at classes offered through Western Nevada College's Continuing Education program. In each 4-week class, we will explore several different approaches to watercolor. We will also investigate art fundamental topics concentrating on one topic per 4-week session. Students may choose their own subjects, with instructor input as to relevance based on individual skill level. Supplies require. Potential watercolor approaches include: wet-on-dry, wet-into-wet, watercolor pouring, wet-to-dry, layering, pulling-the-bead, alla prima painting, plein air and more. Potential fundamental topics include: color temperature, color value, compositional design, color harmony, drawing principles, avoiding common pitfalls, artwork presentation, painting from life, and more. — Carson City group offers support, education to parents with children who have addictions. 6 p.m. Tuesdays. A support group is restarting in Carson City for family members who have loved ones struggling with addictions. The group will meet at a new location on Tuesday nights, 6 p.m. at Partnership Carson City meeting room at 1925 N Carson St. PAL (Parents of Addicted Loved Ones) is a support group of parents helping parents. We meet every week to offer education and support for parents or spouses dealing with an addicted family member. Although PAL has been informally in existence since 2006, we incorporated in Arizona as a non-profit in 2015 in order to help expand PAL nationally. PAL's vision is to make PAL meetings available at no charge to all parents and family members struggling with the addiction of a loved one. PAL is a faith-based Christian organization and our mission is to provide hope to families through education and support. — WNC's Carson City campus offers 8-week research-based stress reduction course. 6 p.m. Western Nevada College’s Continuing Education Department is proud to offer Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction at its Carson City campus. This eight-week course uses 30 years of research to help participants develop more capacity to deal with short- and long-term stressors in their lives. The class will meet weekly on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 8, with an all-day retreat from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on May 4. The cost is $365. The tools offered in the course will teach students how to approach life with more composure, energy, understanding and enthusiasm, and can also help participants develop the ability to manage and reduce pain levels. Through weekly homework, students will improve their focus, resilience and capacity to recover more quickly from life’s challenges. The course is taught by Heather Haslem, a national board-certified health and wellness coach and qualified Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction teacher. — Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'The Lay of the Land' at Carson City showing. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents an exhibition, "The Lay of the Land," by artist Fred Howland in the Community Center’s Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition runs now through June 30, 2019. Howland’s passion is to create a sense of time and place through his photographs. He returns to favorite sites to work, like Hope Valley and Genoa, returning to take repeat images in different seasons and lighting. His interest in landscapes go back to his New England roots where he was more comfortable in the outdoors than in school classrooms. The Sierra Room is open to the public during Carson City official meetings including the first and third Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and many afternoons, Monday through Thursday, 5 to 8 p.m.

— Carson City kindergarten registration begins. The Carson City School District is asking parents to begin registering children who will be 5-years-old by Sept. 30, 2019, and eligible for Kindergarten for the coming 2019-2020 school year. Full-day Kindergarten classes are offered at all elementary schools in Carson City.

— "Home Means Nevada" photo exhibit debut at the Nevada Legislature. The Nevada Arts Council is unveiling a new traveling photo exhibition, “Home Means Nevada” that will start its journey in the hallways of the Nevada Legislature during the 2019 session. The exhibition features the works of 15 contemporary photographers, but which echoes famous photographs and artwork from the late 1800s and early 1900s that helped spur protections for many of our nation’s national parks. The exhibit highlights some of the unique treasures found on federally managed lands across the state, from bighorns to Burning Man, to the ancient rock art and petroglyphs in the Gold Butte area. The exhibition will be displayed in the Senate hallway of the Nevada Legislature, 401 S. Carson St. in Carson City.

— WNC Continuing Education offers Zumba classes. Zumba is a dance form and aerobics fitness program. Zumba involves dance and aerobic movements performed to energetic Latin and pop music from countries around the world. The choreography incorporates hip hop, soca, samba, salsa, meringue and mambo. Squats and lunges are also included. Students should wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes, and bring a towel, water and a positive attitude. No prior dance experience is required — Zumba is about making friends, getting a workout, and enjoying yourself!
