Women to Women Nevada with Candace Stewart

Women to Women Nevada host Carol Paz interviews Candace Stewart, author of "Welcome to Planet Alzheimers" for this week's program.

Candace Stewart of Carson City most recently served as the Program Coordinator for the Dementia Resource Center of Northern Nevada, which was created to support families and caregivers of those with dementia, as well as educate the community on the many different types of dementia.

Ms. Stewart also created and implemented the Aspen Grove Enrichment Program at the Lodge Assisted Living and Memory Care Community in Carson City, Nevada, which is a specialized program for those residents with Mild-Moderate Cognitive Impairment, to guide them in discovering pathways to purposeful living. She is a well-respected expert in the field of Elder Care, also appearing on Its Your City and Nevada Newsmakers.

Ms. Stewart has dedicated much of her career, more than 20 years, advocating for the elderly. She has served as a Washoe County Special Advocate for Elders (SAFE), and worked in the office of the Long Term Care Ombudsman in Ventura County, California. In those roles she ensured that elders were treated with respect, dignity and compassion. She also worked with the Alzheimers Association of Ventura County as the Chapter Manager, working with volunteers and was the voice on the other end of the phone for the Helpline.

Ms. Stewart knows firsthand the challenges facing families of loved ones with dementia and Alzheimers disease; two of her family members were diagnosed with the illness, including her mother.

Her personal and professional experience prompted her to write a booklet Welcome to Planet Alzheimers. Its a short, to the point, and easy to read book regarding communicating with someone who has Alzheimer's, with a little laughter and love added in. It has sold more than 4000 copies worldwide. Ms. Stewart is available for workshops and presentations on such topics as The Dementias, and communication techniques based on her book.

Ms. Stewart has a degree in Behavioral Science and Psychology.

Women to Women Nevada is televised on Charter Media every Thursday at 7 pm on Channel 3 (Reno, Sparks, Fernley, Fallon, Lake Tahoe) and 15 (in Carson City, Gardnerville, Dayton). The locally produced and privately owned program features Northern Nevada women who are making a difference in their communities and in the region.

The interview style of Women to Women allows for an open discussion on the personal and professional challenges that each guest has been faced with and how she has worked through such struggles. The goal of the program is to offer women hope, support and encouragement as they face their own difficulties. 

Guests range in ages as well as circumstances and come from different cultures, religions, traditions, educational levels and professional achievements. The common thread is that they are willing to share their lives with others in the hope that what they have found and learned can be of benefit to others.

A contest in April produced the following winners... but first we want to say thank you for the response; there really were a lot of emails and letters with 53 correct responders.
