Carson City arrests: Father accused of child abuse, endangerment and resisting

A 31-year-old man was arrested May 8 for suspicion of child abuse and endangerment and obstructing and resisting arrest, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office Special Enforcement Team report.

Ryan Paul Aquino was taken into custody in the 1900 block of North Carson Street. According to the arrest report, Carson City Sheriff's Office SET was notified of possible child abuse, with a reporting party stating that a boy was being thrown around inside a room.

Deputies arrived in the 1900 block of North Carson Street and met with the suspect, who is the father of the child, the boy and a relative.

Further investigation revealed drug paraphernalia in the motel room, two handguns unsecured on a shelf in the room, and a fresh smell of marijuana burning with a thick layer of smoke suspended in the air when deputies arrived, the report states.

As part of the investigation, deputies learned the suspect struggles with anger issues, drinks and uses marijuana regular and has had domestic violence and the drug related arrests in Reno, the report states.

Because of the situation, deputies secured a search warrant of the motel room and a blood test for the suspect for alcohol or controlled substance content, the report states.

During the investigation, officers also learned the child, a kindergartner was having difficulties in school, which resulted in meetings with school staff, police and parents, according to the report.

Deputies observed injuries on the child, a minor laceration to his shin and knee and 1-inch by 1-inch bruise on his left thigh, and a 3-inch by 3-inch bruise on his back.

The Department of Child and Family Services was also called as part of the investigation.

Deputies learned the suspect threw a box at the child, which hit a wall; SET investigators also watched a video in where the suspect used profanity, calling the child a "f****** piece of s***" and that the child was exposed to the presence of drugs in the motel room.

Located inside the room was a scale, drug residue, all unsecured, a honey oil dab rig (used for smoking THC concentrate) on the bathroom counter next to a toothbrush, a knife with drug residue, a butane torch and smoking device on a refrigerator, with a folding chair opened in front of the refrigerator, allowing the child access to those items.

Deputies conducted an interview with the suspect, who was mirandized. He stated that he was upset with the child for not doing his homework and back talking him. He admitted to smoking marijuana but denied battering the child.

When deputies attempted to take the suspect into custody, he refused after several lawful commands to put his hands behind his back. He was forcefully taken into custody. He was arrested for suspicion of child abuse and endangerment, a felony, and obstructing and resisting, a misdemeanor. Bail amount listed: $20,411.

In other arrests:
— A 39-year-old Carson City man was arrested Saturday for suspicion of felony third domestic battery. Isaac Cardoza was taken into custody at 4:54 p.m. According to the arrest report, deputies responded to a domestic dispute.

When officers arrived they located the suspect, who was leaving the residence carrying trash. The officer asked the man if he had heard any shouting for fighting. The man, Cardoza, said that some people that he did not know from the downstairs apartment were arguing about drugs.

A female spoke through through a window and said there was an argument with the people downstairs. As deputies prepared to leave, officers saw Cardoza return, carrying laundry and said to the woman, "what the f*** are you taking to them for?"

Officers left, but were called back to the residence around two hours later for a report that there was more arguing at the apartment. Dispatch advised there was a report of a physical confrontation. Due to previous reported involvement with the sheriff's office, the man was placed into handcuffs. He did not want to speak with officers about what happened. He was read his Miranda warning.

Deputies observed the victim had swelling on the left cheek and a swollen abrasion on the left side of her forehead, and fresh blood from an abrasion on her elbow. The suspect did not have any injuries. Deputies determined Cardoza was the primary aggressor, the arrest report states and he was taken into custody for suspicion of third domestic battery.

It was noted in the report that a criminal history showed three prior convictions for domestic battery in California. It noted the jail will be collecting a DNA sample from Cardoza due to his charge of felony domestic battery, which will be compared with the DNA samples recovered from the residence. Bail: $15,000.

— A 32-year-old Carson City woman was arrested early Monday for suspicion of battery on a protected person, a gross misdemeanor.

According to the arrest report, deputies responded to Carson Tahoe Hospital for a report of a battery on hospital staff. The woman had been taken to the hospital after she was brought to the hospital for a legal hold after making suicidal statements and wanting to cause harm to herself, the arrest report states.

While hospital staff was attempting to remove harmful belongings from the woman, she became combative and struck a security guard by kicking him in the head and scratching a nurse on her hand. The medical technician said she wanted to pursue charges of battery against the woman. Bail: $2,637.

— A 56-year-old Carson City man was arrested Sunday 6:13 p.m for misdemeanor suspicion of DUI second offense and speeding, 15 to 20 miles over the speed limit.

According to the arrest report, a deputy observed a vehicle nearly lose control and fishtail on a curve near Fairview Drive and North Edmonds. The vehicle corrected and continued, going 48 mph in a 35 mph zone. The officer made a traffic stop on the vehicle and spoke with the driver and observed an odor of alcoholic beverage coming from the vehicle.

The suspect had red, watery eyes and slurred speech. The driver was asked how much he had to drink. The driver replied 2 to 3 beers. The driver agreed to submit to standardized field sobriety tests and showed signs of impairment on the tests, the report states.

A preliminary breath test was done, in which the man blew a .210. He was arrested for suspicion of DUI. He refused evidentiary testing and a warrant was obtained for a blood draw. Total bail amount listed: $2,749.

— A 30-year-old Carson City man was arrested Sunday, 12:43 a.m. for suspicion of domestic battery. According to the arrest report, deputies were called to a Palo Verde Drive residence for a domestic battery report.

Deputies arrived and met with the suspect and victim. It was learned the suspect left a hole in the wall with his elbow, allegedly broke a nightstand, pinned the victim by pushing her, causing a fall, the arrest report states.

The suspect had an injury to his lip, which he said was sustained in the argument, where the woman was attempting to fight back while being pinned. It was determined the man was the primary aggressor, the arrest report states. Bail: $3,137.
