Concerts, Taste of Downtown, Train Rides and more: Events for Saturday, July 20 in Carson City

Good morning Carson City and happy Saturday! We’ve got a full list of events happening today and tomorrow, including Taste of Downtown, concerts throughout the city, and more!

Saturday, July 20

Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Run. 5 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. at Tahoe Rim Trail — Spooner Summit Trailhead. The Tahoe Rim Trail 100 Mile Endurance Run will be run on single-track trails and dirt roads within Spooner State Park and on the Tahoe Rim Trail located within the state park and on National Forest land, all at or above 8,000 feet of elevation. The 100 mile race will simply be the 50 mile course run twice. But make no mistake, there is nothing simple about the 100 mile course. Please refer to the event website for a course description, elevation profile, and finishing times to get a better perception of the difficulty of this course. All runners must be sufficiently prepared for all trail and environmental conditions. Running any 100 mile race is a true challenge physically, mentally and emotionally. Don’t expect to run a PR here. DO expect to find the finest aid stations in ultra running, epic scenery, and world famous volunteers.

Bingo Blowout at the Carson Mall. 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1227 S. Carson Street. All proceeds go to American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. This event will feature games, food and family fun. $20 for a book of 6 cards per game with a total of 10 games, $5 3 extra cards for all games, $2 bingo dabbers. Prizes include gift cards and gift baskets. Refreshments will be available. Pre-register online and arrive by 10:45 for best seats.

Fresh and Bountiful: Carson City Farmers Market returns this Saturday. 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the corner of 3rd and Curry St. in Carson City. Enjoy fresh-picked produce, local meats, fresh flowers, artisan baked goods, jams, honey, crafts, live music and Carson City’s smiling faces.This week at the market you can enjoy music by Ricky D., stop by the kids' booth to make your own market bag, we have all the supplies for you. We are excited to see you all again this year.

Northern Nevada Pond Club Pond Tour. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Greenhouse Garden Calendar, 2450 S. Curry Street. Experience the beauty and serenity of a private ponds on this pond tour. Discover how ponds can integrate into any type of landscape and exchange ideas about pond construction and water gardening. Carson City ponds are toured from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Douglas County ponds are toured from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Exact addresses and map will be provided with tickets. Tickets are $10 each or two for $15 and are available at the Greenhouse Garden Center and Valley Garden Center: 1144 US Hwy 395. LBL Equine Rescue Mustang Trainer Challenge. 10 a.m. at 3315 Hwy. 50 in Silver Springs. LBL Equine Rescue in Silver Springs, Nev., is excited to announce its first Trainer Challenge Judging Day, July 20 at 10 a.m. You will get to watch our trainers show off what they've done with our wild horses! All horses will be available for adoption, including other rescues.

1870 Mint Building Tour. 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Nevada State Museum. There will be a guided tour of the Carson City Mint Building led by Curator of History Robert Nylen from 10:00-11:00 a.m. and 1:30-2:30 p.m.

Nevada State Museum lecture on Carson City 'CC' Mint Coins. 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at 600 N. Carson Street. Rusty Goe has spent much of his professional life on a deep dive into the history of the U.S. Mint in Carson City. He’s written multiple books on the subject and spent thousands of hours in research, getting to know the people who worked there 150 years ago. Through the years, Goe — a professional coin dealer, author and historian — has held countless coins with the “CC” Mint mark, some with values topping $1 million, and he knows the life stories and travels of many, many individual coins that originated in Carson City in the latter third of the 19th Century.

7th annual Comstock Classic Car Show in Virginia City. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Miners Park. This annual free event presented by the Comstock Classics Car Club. All monies earned go directly to community charities and children’s project for the upcoming year. A great event for all ages. Bring your lawn chairs and make a day of it at Miner’s Park.

Train to Virginia City from Carson City. Event takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 4650 Eastgate Siding Road. Prices for the ride range from $25-$55. Rediscover Nevada’s rich history in mining and mill on the V&T Carson City-Virginia City route as you meander through tunnels, canyons and mining towns aboard a restored 1914 Pullman coach led by a 1916 Baldwin 2-8-0 steam locomotive. This relaxing all-day train excursion is fully narrated with historical facts and anecdotes. Departing from Carson City’s Eastgate Depot, the 24-mile round-trip tour includes a fun 3.5-hour stopover in historic Virginia City, where you can stroll the boardwalks and explore restaurants, shops, saloons, museums, mines and more. Movie Night and Western Jamboree featured at Dangberg Historic Park. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Dangberg Home Ranch Western Jamboree. Musical performances my Mike Beck and the Sierra Sweethearts. Also: Cowboy Poet Tony Argento and the Foothill Vigilantes, a Western theatrical troupe.

Vintage steam train in Virginia City. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Virginia and Truckee Depot, 166 F Street. Rediscover Nevada’s rich history in mining and mills on the V&T Carson City-Virginia City route as you meander through tunnels, canyons and mining towns aboard a restored 1914 Pullman coach led by a 1916 Baldwin 2-8-0 steam locomotive. This relaxing, all-day train excursion is fully narrated with historical facts and anecdotes. Departing from Carson City’s Eastgate Depot, the 24-mile round-trip tour includes a fun 3.5-hour stopover in historic Virginia City, where you can stroll the boardwalks and explore restaurants, shops, saloons, museums, mines and more.

Guided tours of the Nevada State Capitol. Two separate tours will take place at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. every Saturday in Carson City. Tours typically take an hour and include both the exterior of the building, nearby memorials as well as the interior of the building. Tours are available for up to 20 people on a first-come, first-served basis. The building includes numerous historic artifacts that range from portraits of past Nevada governors to sculptures to historical items showcased during Nevada’s Sesquicentennial celebration. The Capitol remains open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Guided tours of up to 20 people can be arranged in advance by calling the Nevada State Museum’s Education Program at 775-687-4810, ext. 237.

Aaron Sims to host campaign kickoff BBQ for mayoral candidacy. 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1111 E. William Street. The public is invited to join us for the official campaign Kickoff for Aaron Sims who will be declaring his candidacy for Mayor of Carson City. This event will be a barbecue and a speaking engagement. We will have good food and music. It is Saturday, July 20. The event will be held at the Firefighters Memorial on the East side of Mills Park. Entrance is just off of Saliman Rd across from the high school. We are asking for an RSVP which you can do by following the link to the facebook event at the bottom.

Saturday Beginning Wheel Throwing at Ogres-Holm Pottery. 1 to 4 p.m. at 1215 S. Carson St. in Carson City. The Ogres of Ogres-Holm introduce you to clay in this 6-week open start class, including open studio time, is designed to get you started. It’s a great way to relax on a Saturday afternoon. $175 for 6 week session or $45 drop ins.

Curative Grace Spin-A-Thon. 1 to 5 p.m. at Lifecycle, 403 Hot Springs Rd. Gather a team together! Pedal for a Purpose! Let's raise funds for Curative Grace's Transformative Interior Design program. Fun! Prizes! Raffle! Ride as a team member or the entire four hours as a team of 1.

Shoe Tree Brewing Co. Punk Show and Beer Release Party. 1 to 6 p.m. at 1496 Old Hot Springs Rd. Carson City’s own Shoe Tree Brewing Company will be hosting a show-and-beer-release party on July 20 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Popular punk band The Lucky Eejits will be headlining the show along with a release of “The Lucky Eegits out of Time Beer” release. Shoe Tree Brewing Company is located at 1496 Old Hot Springs Road next to Sassafras and the Hot Springs.

Lego club at the Carson City Library. 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at 900 N. Roop Street. Build self-led creations through hands-on learning with LEGO Education materials. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times.

2019 Taste of Downtown returns to Carson City. 5:30 to 11:30 p.m. at 101 N. Carson Street. Advocates to End Domestic Violence will host the 26th annual Taste of Downtown event in Carson City on Saturday July 20, 2019 in historic downtown Carson City. From 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. more than 35 local restaurants will be serving up a Taste of their menu for ticket holders. Stroll the streets of downtown Carson City, while listening to four bands and enjoying all that the restaurants, shops, and vendors have to offer. All participating restaurants and bands will line Carson Street from Robinson St. to Fifth St.

Tequila class at Battle Born Wines. 6 p.m. at Battle Born Wines, 1448 U.S. Hwy 395 N. Gardnerville. Space is limited, you must pre-pay.

Live music at Glen Eagles Restaurant. 6:30 to 9 p.m. at 3700 N. Carson St. Enjoy live music that is sure to make you get up and dance every Wednesday-Saturday starting at 6:30-9:00ish.

Levitt AMP Carson City Outdoor Concert: Terrance Simien and the Zydeco Experience. 7 to 10 p.m. at the Change Companies Outdoor Amphitheater, 449 W. King Street. Two-time Grammy winner Terrance Simien and the Zydeco Experience is the headline act at this week's concert, with opening act Darabello with the performer Louisa Lopez. Terrance Simien has been the original instrument, the voice, to both express shared human emotions and bring his audiences of a multicultural tour of the world; he has created a blend of “New Orleans-funk-reggae-flavored-world-blues-American-zydeco roots music,” that will move an audience to start grooving along to new, innovative sounds grounded in a Creole tradition.

Always Patsy Cline show in Minden. 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the CVIC Hall, 1602 Esmeralda Ave. Always… Patsy Cline is based on the true story of Patsy Cline’s friendship with Louise Seger; her number one fan. Louise narrates the story of how she met Patsy and the friendship that continued throughout Patsy’s short-lived life and career. The show is filled with everyone’s favorite songs sung by Carson Valley’s own; the talented local singer-songwriter Krista Jenkins.

Night time 'Scorpion Hunt' featured at Dayton State Park. 8:30 to 10 p.m. What nocturnal desert creatures glow neon green under a black light? Scorpions! After a short discussion about scorpions, we will go on a walk through the park with black lights! Participants should wear close-toed walking shoes (no sandals, please), dress in layers for the weather, and bring water and insect repellant. A limited number of black lights will be available to use, but feel free to bring your own! Please note:we will not be catching or killing any scorpions, only looking at them glow under black lights.

Muscle Powered Sunday Bicycle Ride. 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Fremont Elementary School, 1511 Firebox Rd. Come join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City! Muscle Powered is a local non-profit organization that promotes walking, hiking, biking and trail building. A schedule of all upcoming activities and events can be found at the Muscle Powered website.

Canyon White at Canvas Cafe. 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Canyon White is at The Canvas Cafe every Sunday 9 a.m. to Noon so come on up and start your day right with some yummy breakfast and Canyon White!

Carson City BMX Race for Life. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Pete Livermore Sports Complex. 1555 LIvermore Ln. Carson City BMX will host the annual Race for Life on Sunday, July 21. USABMX started this race and fundraising effort to honor Todd Kingsbury, a young BMX rider who fought and lost his fight with leukemia. This race raises money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Additionally, keeping with Todd’s love for BMX, promoting this race where you do not have to be a USABMX member. So please join us on 21 July, with signups 9 to 10 a.m.. Cost is $10. If under 18, please bring a parent to sign forms.

Rummage sale to benefit local Alzheimer's Chapter. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Carson Mall, 1227 S. Carson Street. Friends of Coach Blaver Memorial Alzheimer’s Fundraiser are hosting a community rummage sale to sponsor the 3rd annual Friends of Coach Blaver Memorial Alzheimer’s Fundraiser in September. Guided walk to the Hanging Tree. 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Mormon Station Historic Park. Join a park interpreter for a guided walk to the infamous “hanging tree,” and hear the tragic story of how “Nevada justice” was carried out here in 1897. This approximately one-mile round-trip guided walk will primarily follow Genoa Lane. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable footwear and bring water.

Carson City's Lone Mountain Veterinary celebrates AAHA Day with Sunday celebration. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Lone Mountain Veterinary Hospital, 780 College Parkway. Lone Mountain Veterinary Hospital is hosting a family fun day on Sunday, July 21 to celebrate American Animal Hospital Association Accredited Hospital Day. AAHA-Accredited Hospital Day is a day to celebrate champions for excellent care. The event takes place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Lone Mountain Veterinary Hospital, 780 College Parkway in Carson City.

Make a Model Covered Wagon. 12 to 2 p.m. at Mormon Station Park. Stop by Mormon Station anytime between 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM to make your own model covered wagon! During this activity, children will be let through the process of making their own model covered wagon using arts and crafts materials. Throughout the activity, we will discuss what life was like for pioneers on the California Trail. This activity is designed for children 5-10 years old, but all are welcome to participate. All necessary supplies will be provided by the park.

A 29-year-old man was arrested Saturday for suspicion of domestic battery, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

Mile High Jazz Band with vocalist Jakki Ford will perform two free big-band concerts in Carson City. The first, on Friday, June 28, is from 6 to 9 p.m. at Mills Park, 1111 E. William Street. It is part of the weekly Family Fun Fridays, featuring live music, food trucks, and family activities every Friday through August 9.

Every year throughout our region, pets are found dead in cars due to heat exhaustion, including those with windows cracked.

With outside temperatures often in the 90s and above, internal car temperatures can reach anywhere from 114 degrees after 10 minutes, to 140 degrees after an hour. Cracking a window often does nothing at all as rolling down the windows has been shown to have little effect on the temperature inside a car, according to the Humane Society of the U.S.

UPDATE: The 'S' on the side of the hill in southeast Carson City that commemorates the Stewart Indian School, and has been there for decades, was vandalized over the weekend. It has since been restored.

Today I started pruning out the water sprouts in my four crabapple trees. Some people might call these “suckers,” but suckers grow up from the bottom of the trunk and water sprouts grow in the upper parts of the tree. I have been training three of these trees into a somewhat flattened umbrella shape for almost 20 years. The water sprouts just ruin that effect. So, out they come.

Unquestionably one of the most entertaining groups of celebrities at the pro-athlete dominated American Century Championship this year is the star-studded lineup of comedians playing in the July 10-14 edition of the tournament at Edgewood Tahoe.

Carson City Fire Department, sheriff's deputies and Nevada State Police were called Sunday morning to a vehicle crash at the intersection of US-50, US-395 South Carson Street and I-580.

The annual Pony Express Re-ride, a re-enactment of the original Pony Express Route that spanned nearly 2,000 miles passing through what are now seven western states, returns to the Carson City area on Wednesday, June 26.

The much-anticipated Carson-Tahoe Home & Garden Show is happening this weekend, featuring an impressive array of vendors offering everything from home improvement services and products to health and beauty services and products, ensuring there is something for everyone. Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called Saturday night to a brush fire in the area of Lepire Drive in East Carson City.
