Meteor watch party, outdoor jazz, family movie night and more Tuesday around Carson City

Heading into Tuesday, August 13, there's a galaxy of events lined up, beginning at midnight with a meteor shower watch party at WNC's Jack C. Davis Observatory. When the sun arrives there's fitness events, a book talk at the Nevada State Library and Archives, outdoor Carson City jazz festival happenings at Comma Coffee and Bob McFadden Plaza, family movie night at the library and more. Here's what's happening Tuesday:

— Summer Meteor Shower Interpretive Programs. 12 Midnight early Tuesday morning. For summer’s most visible meteor showers, join the Carson City Parks, Rec and Open Space Department at Western Nevada College’s Jack C. Davis Observatory for some late night, educational fun! Both viewing parties are free to the public & all ages are welcome. No pre-registration necessary. Please wear close-toed shoes & bring water for night hiking from the Observatory. Head lamps and flashlights are allowed. Parking at the Observatory can be found at 2699 Vanpatten Ave, Carson City. Please call (775) 281-7711 with any questions.

— Muscle Powered Tuesday Morning Walk at Sonoma Park. 8 a.m. Join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike or ride to enjoy the outdoors around Carson City. Muscle Powered is a local non-profit organization that promotes walking, hiking, biking and trail building. A schedule of all upcoming activities and events can be found at www.musclepowered.org/calendar. Tuesday's walk is at Sonoma Park. Meet at 1003 Sonoma Street corner of Sonoma and Fremont. It will be a walk through the neighborhood. Morning walks start at 8 a.m. and are 1 to 2 miles with duration of 1 hour with usually negligible elevation gain, and frequently on paved or smooth paths.

— Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: New Crop 2019. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) presents its exhibition, New Crop 2019, by artists Mark Combs and Frances Melhop. Carson City Courthouse Gallery, 885 E Musser St., Carson City.

— Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: Graphically Defined. 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) is delighted to present Graphically Defined, a group exhibition of work by seventeen Western Nevada College students. This exhibit includes a wide variety of art including ceramics, drawing, graphic design, painting and photography that shows the diversity of the students’ creativity. The Business Resource Innovation Center (BRIC) is open Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. 108 E Proctor St., Carson City.

— Historian to speak about upcoming 'Behind the Arch' book at Carson City lecture series. Noon. Joyce M. Cox, author of Arcadia Publishing books on Sparks, Washoe County, and the upcoming "Behind the Arch, The Story of Reno, Nevada’s Unique Chamber of Commerce," will be the featured speaker for the August Archives Appetizer brown bag lunch in Carson City. The event will be held in the Nevada State Library and Archives Building, Suite 110, from noon to 1 p.m. on August 13, 2019. Attendees are encouraged to bring a lunch and light refreshments will be served. The “Nevada in Small Bites” book talk series is held on the second Tuesday of each month. The Nevada State Library and Nevada State Archives take turns hosting this event. Join us for lunchtime conversations, guest authors, and historians and learn a bit more about of Nevada's history, literature, and community. Open to everyone. The event will be held at the Nevada State Library and Archives Building, 100 N Stewart St, Carson City.

— Shred Kids Mountain Bike Camp (Intermediate) hosted by Carson City Parks and Rec. 4:30 p.m. This camp will teach everything needed to become a safe and well-rounded mountain biker. Instructors will be NICA certified coaches from the Carson High School Cycling Team. Instruction will focus on safety, maintenance, etiquette, and proper techniques for uphill, downhill, and cross country riding. Please have your bike inspected by a bike mechanic prior to the camp to make sure it is in working order. A limited supply of bikes and helmets are available if you do not have your own. For ages 9-14. In order to register for the intermediate level camp, participants must have completed a beginner level camp earlier this summer or the camp last summer. Each day, meet at the Ash Canyon Trailhead on the corner of Winnie and Foothill. Bring sunscreen, water, and snacks each day. — Phreemium quartet plays in Comma Courtyard as Part of Jazz and Beyond Carson City Music Festival. 5 to 7 p.m. Phreemium plays experimental jazz fused with all sorts of stuff. This quartet is highly improvisational, in the jazz tradition, and they have a large number of original works. The group includes drummer Brandon Dodge, a native of Carson City and former drummer with the Mile High Jazz Band. Phreemium features Branden McKinnon on bass guitars, Derek Fong on the saxophones, Clark Harrell on keyboards, and Brandon Dodge on drums. This group pushes the boundaries on what it means to play highly improvised jazz (and beyond) while still having a foot planted in written music. They strive for each performance to be their own and look to keep the music fun to both play and listen to. This is a free concert. 312 S. Carson St., Carson City.

— Muscle Powered Ladies Mountain Bike Ride. 5:30 p.m. Come join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City! Muscle Powered is a local non-profit organization that promotes walking, hiking, biking and trail building. Tuesday Evening Ladies MTB Ride is from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Meetup at Foothill Drive just off of North Winnie Lane. Rides are open to all skill levels. All riders must carry water and have a mountain bike in safe working condition, helmet, closed toed shoes, spare tube, pump and tools to change a flat tire. — Muscle Powered Tuesday Evening Hike at Clear Creek. 5:30 p.m. Join Muscle Powered for a free guided group walk, hike or ride to enjoy the outdoors around Carson City. Muscle Powered is a local non-profit organization that promotes walking, hiking, biking and trail building. Tuesday evening's hike is the Clear Creek Trail connector from Tahoe Rim Trail Spooner Summit-South (Partial). Meet at the Highway 50 Park n Ride where we will carpool up to the Spooner Summit to park in the South Parking lot for the Tahoe Rim Trail. The trail begins just east of the bathroom and is accessed via the Forest Service road just east of the bathroom. We will hike in about 2.5 miles and then turn around and return on the same path. Tuesday evening hikes start at 5:30 p.m. and are usually 90 minutes or more and are 4 to 6 miles in length.

— Tuesday night archery shoots return to Carson City's Centennial Park Archery Range. 5:30 p.m. Every Tuesday evening, 5:30 to dusk, the Clear Creek Bowmen host its Tuesday Night Archery Shoots at the Centennial Park Archery Range in Carson City. Both traditional and 3D targets are available. The target range is open shooting for use at no cost. There is a $5 fee (kids 17 and under are free) to shoot the 3D animal targets. We have archery equipment, volunteers and instructors to get you started. Come on out and join us. It’s a great way to experience the world of archery. Open to all ages. — Family Movie & Craft Night: The Angry Birds Movie. 6 to 8 p.m. Come craft the night away and watch The Angry Birds Movie! The Angry Birds Movie follows flightless birds leading a mostly happy existence, except for Red (Jason Sudeikis), who just can’t get past the daily annoyances of life. His temperament leads him to anger management class, where he meets fellow misfits Chuck (Josh Gad) and Bomb. Red becomes even more agitated when his feathered brethren welcome green pigs to their island paradise. As the swine begin to get under his skin, Red joins forces with Chuck and Bomb to investigate the real reason behind their mysterious arrival. Registration is required. Go here to register. — Empty Bowls, Open Studio. 6 to 8:30 p.m. Create an empty bowl to donate to charity, instruction will be offered to create and paint a bowl or create something on our own during open studio session. Open studio time at Ogres-Holm Pottery is free of charge and open to the public. 1215 South Carson Street.

— Jazz and Beyond: Rosebud’s Dance Band at Bob McFadden Plaza. 7:30 to 9:30. Free. Rosebud’s Dance Band – Formed a few years ago as an affiliate of the Carson Valley Pops Orchestra, RoseBud’s Dance Band meets in Rich Sheldrew’s “Man Garage” with RoseBud, the Sheldrew’s rescue burro looking on. Some of the approximately 20 musicians are members of the Carson Valley Pops Orchestra. The band, led by trombonist Dave Young, plays mostly Big Band era dance, jazz, and swing, with some modern pieces. This group has performed for Jazz & Beyond since 2015. Bring your dancing shoes! Seating is limited. Audience is encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs. Bob McFadden Plaza (Third Street Stage) is located at 310 S. Carson St.

— Fall youth soccer in Carson City begins soon. Parents can sign up their children ages 3 to 16. AYSO Carson City has a family discount for multiple kids. — WNC Continuing Education offers Zumba class. 5:45 p.m. Zumba is a dance form and aerobics fitness program. Zumba involves dance and aerobic movements performed to energetic Latin and pop music from countries around the world. The choreography incorporates hip hop, soca, samba, salsa, meringue and mambo. Squats and lunges are also included. Students should wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes, and bring a towel, water and a positive attitude! No prior dance experience is required - Zumba is about making friends, getting a workout, and enjoying yourself! Classes are held at the WNPAC dance studio, located at 951 N Stewart St. The class is $48 and our direct line is 775-445-4241.

— Dance Workshop for Couples at Yaple's Ballroom. In this beginner level workshop you must have a partner in this class, we will not be rotating. It can be a friend, husband, wife, boyfriend or girlfriend, you just have to have a buddy with you to be your partner. We are going to learn the style of dance of Night Club Two Step and some other exercises that will help you with your connection to your partner. $20.
