Events around Carson City for Wednesday, August 14

Heading into the midweek, Wednesday, August 14, 2019 activities abound around the capital city. There's a new group for writers that meets at the Brewery Arts Center; a salary negotiation workshop at WNC, a chautauqua and author presentations at Dangberg Historic Park. There's also the Jazz and Beyond Carson City Music Festival that will feature the Wesley Orsolic Trio during Wheeled Food Wednesday at the BAC, with jams to continue at Living the Good Life; there's also a real estate workshop for veterans, art showings, salsa dancing and more. — Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: New Crop 2019. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) presents its exhibition, New Crop 2019, by artists Mark Combs and Frances Melhop. Carson City Courthouse Gallery, 885 E Musser St., Carson City.

— Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: Graphically Defined. 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) is delighted to present Graphically Defined, a group exhibition of work by seventeen Western Nevada College students. This exhibit includes a wide variety of art including ceramics, drawing, graphic design, painting and photography that shows the diversity of the students’ creativity. The Business Resource Innovation Center (BRIC) is open Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. 108 E Proctor St., Carson City.

— Open Studio Painting at the Brewery Arts Center. 9 a.m. Work on your own paintings from subject matter you chose for yourself. The instructor will provide one on one instruction throughout the class. Students may use oil, acrylic, or watercolor paint. Dry media is also welcome. Bring your own supplies and source materials (such as photographs or drawings you wish to paint). This in an open enrollment drop in class so there is no need to enroll in advance. — Nevada Artists Association Judged Photography Show and Summer Show. 10 a.m. The Nevada Artists Association Presents: The 2019 Judged Photography Show and The Members' Summer Show. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily except Mondays through Sept. 6. Come and see all the beautiful entries and vote for your top three People's Choice favorites in the Judged Photography Show. The Gallery also offers a wide variety of handcrafted gifts by local artists. We are located at 449 W. King Street at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City.

— Carson City welcomes newest Writers Group, meeting at BAC. 1 to 2 p.m. Carson City's newest creative writing group "We're Always 'Write' CC Chapter" welcomes you to share your love of writing with us! Meet fellow writers as we work on creative writing exercises in a fun, safe environment. Our first meeting will be at the Brewery Arts Center Cafe on August 14th from 1-2 p.m. Contact Monica Marcinko with any questions, 775-315-1020. — Basic Pottery Skills at Ogres-Holm Pottery. 1 to 4 p.m. Studio manager, Lucas Lamont, introduces you to clay, in this 6-week open start class, designed to get you started with clay. The syllabus includes pinch pots, coil pots, sculpture, and an introduction to wheel throwing. $175 for 6 week class including open studio times or $45 for drop in classes. 1215 S. — Free Salary Negotiation Meet Up. 3:30 p.m. Are you paid what you are worth? Do you know how to negotiate for a salary that is commensurate with your skills and expertise? If your answer is no, then you should attend AAUW’s free meet-up this Wednesday, August 14. AAUW Work Smart is a highly effective workshop that builds the skills and confidence women need to successfully negotiate for salary and benefits for the rest of their careers. This meet-up will allow participants to access AAUW’s Work Smart online program with facilitators available to answer your questions. — Wine and Dine Watercolor Classes. 4:15 to 5:45 p.m. Students get a reminder text each week. Drop in basis — no monthly commitment necessary. — Shred Kids Mountain Bike Camp (Intermediate). 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. This camp will teach ages 9-14 everything needed to become a safe and well-rounded mountain biker. Instructors will be National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) certified coaches from the Carson High School Cycling Team. Instruction will focus on safety, maintenance, etiquette, and proper techniques for uphill, downhill, and cross country riding. Please have your bike inspected by a bike mechanic prior to the camp to make sure it is in working order. A limited supply of bikes and helmets are available if you do not have your own. In order to register for the intermediate level camp, participants must have completed a beginner level camp earlier this summer or the camp last summer. Each day, meet at the Ash Canyon Trailhead on the corner of Winnie and Foothill. Bring sunscreen, water, and snacks each day. — Carson City's Wild Horse Children's Theater offers audition workshop for Disney's 'Frozen Jr.' 5 to 7 p.m. Wild Horse Children’s Theater in Carson City will hold an audition workshop for Disney's "Frozen, Jr.'" on Wednesday, August 14, 2019 at the Brewery Arts Center. Don’t be left out in the cold! Get a head start on learning the music and dance for Disney’s "Frozen, Jr." Learn from Wild Horse Children’s Theater directors what they are looking for in each character and everything you need to know for your audition. This workshop will help prepare those young actors to audition confidently by strengthening audition and performance technique. The workshop will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall, 449 West King Street.

— Carson City realtors to host Veterans Night. 5 to 7 p.m. There will be a Veterans Night on Wednesday, August 14 at The Carson Plaza Event Center, 209 East 9th Street in Carson City. The event will be hosted by Brian Alexander and Connie Hayden. This event is for veterans who are buying and selling Real Estate. It will focus on VA loans, grants programs, escrow and insurance. — Jazz and Beyond: Wesley Orsolic Trio plays for Wheeled Food Wednesday at BAC's Change Companies Stage. 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wesley Orsolic Band will be performing during Wheeled Food Wednesday as part of Jazz and Beyond Carson City Music Festival. — Carson City's Wheeled Food Wednesday at the Brewery Arts Center. 5:30 p.m. The Brewery Arts Center campus in Carson City is alive Wednesdays this summer with the best food trucks around for a tasty midweek alternative. Wheeled Food Wednesday returns from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The BAC will have kid’s activities, plus beer and wine selections for adults. The Brewery Arts Center campus parking lot is at 511 West King Street.

— Spanish Night, Salsa Dance Lessons in Downtown Carson City. 6 p.m. SALSA Wednesdays located at Yaple's Ballroom Dance Studio, 315 N. Carson St. Carson City. Classes are 6 pm Intermediate Level Class, 7 pm Beginning Level Class. Just $10 a class​. Then after your dance lesson, just for us food and drink specials offered across the street at Battle Born Social! — Chautauqua and Author Presentations at Dangberg Historic Park. 6:30 p.m. August continues with a Chautauqua presentation of Mary McNair Mathews and a presentation by author Brooke Santina at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park. Mary McNair Mathews, Comstock businesswoman and author of the book Ten Years in Nevada will be portrayed by Anita Watson. When Mary McNair Mathews arrived on the Comstock, she carried with her more than carpetbags and trunks. Very much a woman of her time and culture, she brought along her values and beliefs, expectations and prejudices. She closely observed and commented upon the people and community she adopted for a time. Mary Mathews wrote about her life on the Comstock and in doing so, provided one woman’s perspective of an intriguing time and place. Anita Watson, a long time Nevadan who has always been interested in the people and places of the Silver State. Watson earned her Ph.D. at the University of Nevada, Reno, where she has taught history and been the coordinator of the Shared History Program. She has worked in the museum education field in Nevada and Minnesota, and published on the topics of Nevada women, Nevada medicine and general Nevada history. — Pajama Storytime at Carson City Library. 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Wear your PJs for a bedtime-themed storytime! Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times. 900 North Roop Street, Carson City.

— Jazz and Beyond: Sherre Carnes and Chuck Hughes. 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. at Living the Good Life Nightclub, Bistro Lounge. Come and enjoy a Jazz Jam as part of the Jazz and Beyond Carson City Music Festival. 1480 North Carson Street.
