Train rides, railbike tours, live music and more highlight Labor Day weekend events around Carson City

Heading into Labor Day weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. Steam train rides in Carson City and Virginia City will be available Saturday through Sunday. The Carson Canyon Railbike Tours will run four times over the next three days, bringing excitement unlike any other. Sand Harbor in Lake Tahoe will open two hours early beginning at 6 a.m. to ease capacity and congestion. Combined with plenty of live music, Labor Day weekend will be a thrill! Read on for more information.

New safety guidelines for the state of Nevada have been enforced, so please make sure to wear a mask and practice safe social distancing.

Friday, September 4
Carson River Canyon Railbike Tours. 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 4650 Eastgate Siding Road. Visit Carson City, in partnership with the V&T Railway Commission, have announced an all-new attraction unlike any other in northern Nevada. Railbikes will run Tuesday-Sunday, four times a day 10 a.m., noon, 2p.m. and 4 p.m. Excursions are $45 per person. Tickets may be purchased online at vtrailway.com.

Steam Train Rides through Labor Day Weekend at the Nevada State Railroad Museum. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 2180 S. Carson St. Nevada State Railroad Museum will have steam train rides behind historic Virginia & Truckee locomotive No. 25. The train operates on a loop around the museum and the ride lasts approximately 40 minutes. Due to the pandemic, seating capacity will be limited for all trains.

Foothill Gardens Online Education Series. 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. hosted by the Greenhouse Garden Project. In this installment, Arnold Carbone of Glorious Garlic Farm in Washoe Valley will cover everything you need to know to grow amazing garlic over the winter. You'll learn about growing in the ground, containers, soil requirements, the many different types of garlic, and how to harvest and cure your garlic for storage.

Nevada Artists Association 2020 Summer Show. 12 to 4 p.m. at 449 W. King St. The Nevada Artists Association is excited to present the 2020 “Summer Show." This judged show represents a collection of 74 plus photographs, paintings, drawings, mixed media and 3D pieces by Nevada Artists Association members and non-members from Northern Nevada.

Dance Class at Yaple's Ballroom Dance Studio. 3 to 4 p.m. at 315 N. Carson St. Join us for some dancing! No partner needed. Learn dance steps to all Ballroom and Latin dances. A Mix of mini dance routines and line dances. Improve turns and balance. Good for anyone who is wanting to learn to dance as well as lose some weight! Class is just $10 per person or sign up for the month for $35.

Beers in the Brewery at The Union Carson. 4 to 5 p.m. 302 N. Carson St. Join us in the brewery every Friday for a free beer tasting! Come and stop by the brewery to taste a couple of our house beers and have a few small bites while we teach you what makes each of our featured beers unique and delicious!

Virtual Hour of Code. 4 to 5 p.m. hosted by the Carson City Library. For ages 10-17, join us virtually via Zoom. Registration is required at the following link above. Do you enjoy coding? Then join us for one hour of computer programming each month! No prior experience needed.

Dale Poune at Bella Vita Bistro. 5 to 8 p.m. at 1304 S. Stewart St. Dale Poune performing solo with some special guests sitting in. Great food , drinks and service will be on sale for interested participants.

Dinner and Live Music at Living the Good Life. 5 to 9:30 p.m. at 1480 N. Carson St. Living The Good Life will be open Friday and Saturday at 5 p.m. for dine in or take out. We will have live music along with tasty food and drinks for those interested in joining us!

Virtual Open Mic Night at A to Zen. 6 p.m. at 1803 N. Carson St. In light of COVID-19, A to Zen Gift Shop in Carson City is hosting a virtual open mic night every Friday at 6 p.m. Interested participants can record their performance and send the video with the link above.

Friday Night Karaoke at the Whiskey Tavern. 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at 3481 Hwy 50 E. in Carson City. Come hang out with the Whiskey Tavern and J and M Productions as we sing the night away every Friday! Must be at least 21 years old.

Saturday, September 5

In anticipation of a surge in visitors this Labor Day weekend, Sand Harbor State Park will open two hours early, 6 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 5 through Monday, Sept. 7, to help protect public safety by reducing traffic congestion and related impacts during peak hours.

Carson City Farmer's Market. 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the corner of 3rd and Curry St. The Carson City Farmer’s Market has returned every Saturday with fresh fruits, vegetables and much more!

Endless Summer Saturdays at the Pink House. 9 to 11 a.m. at 193 Genoa Lane in Genoa. With so many of our pans canceled, we’re happy to close out the summer with something new to the Pink House. Come visit us for a fun time on Saturday!

Pony Express honored with special medallion in Carson City. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Nevada State Museum, 600 N. Carson St. A special medallion honoring the Old West Pony Express mail route will be stamped on historical Coin Press No. 1 on Saturday, Sept. 5 at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City.

Carson and Mills Park Railroad offer weekend train rides through Labor Day. 12 to 4 p.m. The Carson and Mills Park Railroad entrance is located on Saliman Street just south of Highway 50 East next to the Marv Teixeira Pavilion. Come ride Nevada's only operating 2-foot gauge railroad in Carson City's Mills Park. Saturdays and Sundays through Labor Day, 12 noon to 4 p.m. Tickets are $2 per person, children 3 and under are free, and can be purchased at the Depot in Mills Park.

BAC's Flatbed Concert Series continues with Tyler Stafford and Eric Andersen. 5 to 8 p.m. at the neighborhood near Empire Ranch, 1875 Fair Way in Carson City. Armed with an acoustic guitar and a voice that will stop you mid step, Tyler Stafford is one songwriter and performer you do not want to miss.

Nevada Guard to remember 2011 IHOP shooting victims Sunday with run, memorial plaque. The Nevada Guard is set to host its ninth annual memorial run/walk on Sunday, Sept. 6, to commemorate the victims of the International House of Pancakes shooting that occurred in 2011. The run/walk will start at what used to be the Carson City IHOP, 3883 S. Carson St., at 7 a.m. Sunday.

Nevada Lieutenant Governor hosts Carson City Forum on May 29th

The Lieutenant Governor’s Office and the Office of Small Business Advocacy have announced a community forum focused on building a strong and vibrant community and engaging Carson City’s small business owners.

Standup comedy funnyman Sean Peabody, who starred in Casino Boss that was filmed at the Carson Nugget, will appear this Saturday night with two shows, 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the Carson Nugget Grand Showroom in Carson City.

UPDATE: Carson City responds to questions regarding Fourth of July fireworks changes, access to Centennial Park.

For the first time in 33 years, the Carson City Fourth of July fireworks will not be held near Mills Park.

Instead, the display will move to Eagle Valley Golf Course, located at 3999 Centennial Park Dr. In addition, the Fourth of July celebration will now include a golf tournament in addition to a dinner and VIP Fireworks viewing option.

The Moving Wall, a half-size replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C., will visit Douglas County for the second time this spring. The Moving Wall, which has been viewed around the country since 1984, will will be in Minden for the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

The Wall will be free to view for the duration of its display at the Eastside Memorial Park, 1600 Buckeye Rd, Minden from May 23-28, 2024. The building of the wall began at 10 a.m. Thursday.

YERINGTON — Lyon County and the Nevada Secretary of State are aware of the error on the 2024 Lyon County primary ballot regarding the number of candidates to vote for in the Fernley City Council Ward 5 and the Stagecoach General Improvement District Trustees races. Lyon County and the Secretary of State's Office are working through these issues and will have additional information for the candidates and voters by the end of this week.

This June, a group of over 100 denizens of Carson City will depart for a 10-day educational exploration of Japan.

On Tuesday, June 4, 2024, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with the Carson City School District and the Carson City Fire Department, will conduct a comprehensive active shooter Full-Scale Exercise at Carson High School.

On Friday, Carson City Supervisors will be discussing potential salary increases for classified and unclassified city workers. The meeting takes place beginning at 8 a.m. in the Bob Crowell Board Room of the Community Center, located at 851 E. William St.

The raises are a part of the planned 2025 city budget, which was first approved in April.
