Pirate Pup Parade, viewing of 'Hook,' Wheeled Food and more Wednesday in Carson City

UPDATE: Due to weather concerns, the Pirate Pup Parade will be moved indoors outside of the Black Box Theater at the Brewery Arts Center. The film showing of "Hook" will be held in the BAC Performance Hall. Food Trucks will be outside in the parking lot.

Going into Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2019, we're looking at a slight chance of showers with highs in the upper 60s around the Carson City region. Looking ahead there's art workshops and showings, as well as the Scallywaggers Pirate Pup Parade, Wheeled Food Wednesday and outdoor showing of the film classic "Hook" at the Brewery Arts Center, acrylic pour jewelry making at Rustically Divine, Salsa dancing and more.

Here's what's happening Wednesday:

— Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: New Crop 2019. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Carson City Courthouse Gallery, 885 E. Musser St. The Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) presents its exhibition, New Crop 2019, by artists Mark Combs and Frances Melhop.

— Open Studio Painting at the Brewery Arts Center. 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Work on your own paintings from subject matter you chose for yourself. The instructor will provide one on one instruction throughout the class. Students may use oil, acrylic, or watercolor paint. Dry media is also welcome. Bring your own supplies and source materials (such as photographs or drawings you wish to paint). This in an open enrollment drop in class so there is no need to enroll in advance. Classes: 9:00-12:00 or 12:30-3:30. $25 per session or $40 for the day, payment made to instructor. For more details contact the Brewery Arts Center here or by calling 883-1976.

— Nevada Artists Association Art Gallery Autumn Membership Show, now through Oct. 18. Enjoy artwork from our member artists. Membership has risen to nearly 150 local artists during our 40th year operating as a gallery. The Autumn Membership show runs from Sept. 8 to Oct. 18 at Nevada Artists Association Art Gallery at 449 W. King Street in Carson City. Open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays. Also, save the date, Nov. 3 we will be hosting our 40th Anniversary Celebration on location at the Gallery, 2-4 p.m. Please join us in marking this historical occasion.

— Basic Pottery Skills at Ogres-Holm Pottery. 1 to 4 p.m. Studio manager, Lucas Lamont, introduces you to clay, in this 6-week open start class, designed to get you started with clay. The syllabus includes pinch pots, coil pots, sculpture, and an introduction to wheel throwing. $175 for 6 week class including open studio times or $45 for drop in classes. 1215 S. — Wine and Dine Watercolor Classes. 4:15 to 5:45 p.m. Students get a reminder text each week. Drop in basis — no monthly commitment necessary. The event is at Black Bear Diner inside Max Casino, 900 South Carson Street.

— Carson City's Wheeled Food Wednesday at the Brewery Arts Center. 5 p.m. The Brewery Arts Center campus in Carson City is alive Wednesdays this summer with the best food trucks around for a tasty midweek alternative. Wheeled Food Wednesday returns from 5 to 8 p.m. The BAC will have kid’s activities, plus beer and wine selections for adults. The Brewery Arts Center campus parking lot is at 511 West King Street.

— Pet parade, Pirate-themed movie night with a showing of 'Hook' and more at Brewery Arts Center. The next Carson City outdoor summer movie night is Sept. 18 including food trucks, a pet costume contest and the classic childhood pirate movie, “Hook.” Head to the Brewery Art Center’s Minnesota Street Stage, where Wheeled Food Wednesday food trucks will be serving 5-8 p.m. and the pirate-themed pet costume contest will begin at 6:30 p.m.

“A lot of our summer programming is free to the public thanks to the generous support of local sponsors,” said Rhonda Abend, founder of the Carson City Classic Cinema Club. “Our partnering organizations strongly believe exposure to the arts sharpens critical and creative skills, contributing to student achievement in school and beyond. Films are the perfect platform for this ideology since, once deconstructed, literally every art form is represented in film.” The summer movie series is hosted by the cinema club, the BAC and Realtor Garret Lepire. The team also added a special feature for this movie night to help support the Carson Animal Services Initiative — the Scallywaggers Pirate Pup Parade and costume contest. To participate in the pirate pet costume contest, check in at the Scallywaggers table at 6 p.m. Participants can also reserve a spot on Facebook here. The $10 entry fee will be donated to CASI, and the judging categories are Crew Favorite (audience-selected); Best Captain (small dog); and Best First Mate (large dog). Dogs should be well behaved and must be on a leash as well as vaccinated (shot record required) and not in heat. Dog owners are expected to clean up after their pets; bags as well as receptacles will be available. Shade and water bowls will also be provided. Families attending the event are encouraged to wear pirate-themed costumes as well.

— Spanish Night, Salsa Dance Lessons in Downtown Carson City. 6 p.m. SALSA Wednesdays located at Yaple's Ballroom Dance Studio, 315 N. Carson St. Carson City. Classes are 6 pm Intermediate Level Class, 7 pm Beginning Level Class. Just $10 a class​. Then after your dance lesson, just for us food and drink specials offered across the street at Battle Born Social! The dance floor is open, music will be playing and you can continue dancing and practicing your dance moves! The Salsa Social will cost NOTHING, only but your support to the restaurant and bar. Help us build us downtown Carson City with more fun activities that the whole family can join!

— Acrylic Pour Jewelry Making at Rustically Divine. 6 to 7:30 p.m. Create modern-abstract fluid effects with acrylic pouring in three separate pendants, one silver chain included. Register online here. Note: pourings will need to be left overnight to cure and be assembled, please plan to pick up artwork as soon as possible. — Pajama Storytime at Carson City Library. 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Wear your PJs for a bedtime-themed storytime! Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times. 900 North Roop Street, Carson City.
