Events and happenings around Carson City for Wednesday, Oct. 10

It is also International Walk to School Day, so be prepared to see a lot more school children walking with their parents and friends to school along sidewalks and crossing streets. Among other featured events include the launch of "Trailblazing Nevada,” a new museum experience inside Battle Born Hall at the Nevada State Capitol, a fundraiser at Firehouse Subs for a Carson City cancer patient, a GOP open house, a talk about climate change at WNC and more.

— Carson City, Douglas and Lyon join students statewide in Wednesday's Walk to School Day. 7 a.m. Many Nevada schoolchildren will take part in organized events to walk or bicycle to school on Wednesday Oct. 10 in recognition of International Walk to School Day. Walking and bicycling to school events are planned for Carson City, Douglas, Lyon and other counties. Approximately 50 Nevada schools in 13 different communities participated in last year’s Walk to School Day as part of ongoing activities to promote walking and bicycling throughout the year.

— Revamped Battle Born Hall museum exhibit in Carson City unveiled at Capitol. 10 a.m. “Trailblazing Nevada,” a new museum experience inside Battle Born Hall at the Nevada State Capitol, will be unveiled Wednesday, Oct. 10 at a public reception headed by Gov. Brian Sandoval. The event starts in the old Assembly Chambers on the second floor of the capitol building and will celebrate a months-long renovation of Battle Born Hall made possible by $700,000 in funding from the NV150 Foundation. It is free and open to the public. A reception will follow the ceremony in the Guinn Room. Joining Sandoval in the ceremony will be former Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki, who served as chairman of NV150 Commission, the entity that produced Nevada’s sesquicentennial celebration in 2014. Bud Hicks of the NV150 Foundation and Peter Barton, administrator of the Nevada Division of Museums and History, will also take part in the ceremony.

— Carson City Republican Party Open House. 3 p.m. Come join the Carson City Republican Party for an Open House on Wednesday, Oct. 10 from 3 to 7 p.m. to celebrate the opening of its new Carson City Republican Party Headquarters. The organization moved to 1971 California Street, Carson City, a few doors down from its former office and will share our Headquarters with the Nevada State Republican Party. Refreshments will be served. In addition to the Open House, the organization will also have a Meet and Greet for John Wood, candidate for Board of Supervisors, Ward 1.

— Fundraiser for cancer patient Susie Bongers, 5 p.m. to closing at Firehouse Subs. Susie Bongers of Carson City who works with her mother and sister at MJ Beauty Salon, has been diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme. Today, Wednesday, the fundraiser is at Firehouse Subs. On Tuesday it was at the Pizza Factory. The generous owners of both restaurants are hosting the fundraisers to help the family raise money to pay for medical bills. Firehouse Subs is located at 3120 Highway 50 East in Carson City.

— Smoke, Heat, Mosquitoes and Ticks: Panel to discuss climate change and health at WNC. 6 p.m. A recorded TED Talk by Dr. Jonathan Patz, and panel discussion by local experts on the impacts of warmer temperatures on our health will take place at Western Nevada Community College’s Marlette Hall on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 6 p.m. Marlette Hall is located in the Cedar Building on the south side of the Carson City campus. Dr. Patz is the Director of the Global Health Institute at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. His TED talk is titled “Climate change is affecting our health – what’s the cure?” The talk lasts about 20 minutes. After the TED Talk, the panelists will discuss how increased fires, smoke, heat and biting insects affect our health here in Northern Nevada.

— Mindfulness and Meditation Class Series. 6:30 p.m. his 5-week class will introduce attendees to the practice of sitting, walking, and eating meditation, and teach participants how to bring mindfulness to everyday life. Core Buddhist concepts will also be explored. Some classes will include mindful movement. Between them teachers Kathy Schwerin and Angela Sullivan have almost 100 years of meditation and yoga experience. They have been teaching one thing or another since they were children and are delighted to share the practices and benefits of mindfulness and meditation. There is no charge; donations gratefully accepted. Class will be held from 6:30-8pm at Unity of the Sierra, 1933 California Street, Carson City.

— Free Filmmaking Workshop at Paradise Salon and Spa. 6:30 p.m. With "Carson Creepy Short Horror Film Competition" coming up, we offer our yearly free filmmaking workshops at Paradise Salon Spa and Wellness, 3430 Executive Pointe Way in Carson City, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Short 20-minute workshops include Scary Make Up, Screen Writing, Special Effects, Lighting and more! Wired Wednesday is the group that brings you "Jukebox International Film Festival," "City Wide Short Film Competition," and "Tell Me That You Love Me" film competitions.

— Donations Sought: Pet food drive underway at Carson City's Michael Hohl Motor Company. All day through October. Michael Hohl Motor Company of Carson City has launched its fourth annual ‘Give A Dog A Bone’ pet food drive to fill a pickup for the nonprofit organization Pets of the Homeless. The national nonprofit organization based in Carson City provides pet food and basic emergency veterinary care to the homeless pets in local communities across the United States including the capital city. During the month of October bring your donations of dog and cat food to the Michael Hohl Motor Company GM showroom at 3700 S. Carson St. Carson City and help fill the truck. The donations will be delivered to FISH in North Carson City where over 230 local people are asking for pet food each month.

— Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space is currently seeking individuals and pairs interested in leading interpretive programs in one of our many parks and open spaces. Interested individuals and pairs are encouraged to apply. If interested, go here.

— Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California Native TANF Program launch Winter Coat Drive. The Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California Native TANF Program is hosting a winter coat drive Oct. 1 through Nov. 2, 2018. Please donate new or gently used, clean coats, hats, gloves and snow pants. Items will be distributed to families in need on Nov. 8, 2018 at 2310 South Carson St. Suite 1 Carson City or the Douglas County Washoe Tribe of NV & CA Native TANF Program office, 1248 Waterloo Ln, Gardnerville.

— The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition, Americana with Cadmium Orange, by artist Gig Depio at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Depio is an artist and an advocate for public art in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was awarded the 2016 Fellowship Grant in Painting by the Nevada Arts Council (NAC). He has worked on various exhibitions and projects with the Nevada Museum of Art, Nevada Arts Council’s OXS Gallery, and UNLV Marjorie Barrick Museum, among others. Depio graduated from Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines. He lives in Las Vegas with his family. Carson City Courthouse Gallery, 885 E Musser St., Carson City

— Student Art Exhibition: The Wind Calls, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) announces it’s exhibition, The Wind Calls featuring nine University of Nevada, Reno, students’ work. The free exhibition is available to the public through October 9, 2018, Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – noon and 1:00 – 4:00 pm. It is held at the BRIC, 108 E Proctor St., Carson City. The Wind Calls includes work by Mahedi Anjuman, Nicki Bracco, Mark Combs, Teal Francis, Hannah Huntley, Gwaylon Leaf, Frances Melhop, Ally Messer, and Carla Miller. The artists used a wide variety of art media including mixed media, ceramics, sculpture, painting, printmaking, and photography to make their art and comments on contemporary life and society.

— The Capital City Arts Initiative, also known as CCAI, presents its exhibition, "Jenny Raven: The Creative Growth Years 1979 - 1984" with artwork by artist Jenny Raven in the city’s Community Center Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition is available to the public through October 18, 2018. The Sierra Room is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

— Nevada Artists Association opens Carson City Autumn art show. The Nevada Artists Association opened its annual "Autumn" exhibit will run through Oct. 19, 2018. More than 100 local and regional artists make up the non-profit NAA which operates the gallery located at Carson City's Brewery Arts Center. In addition to the Autumn Show, two association members will be featured, with art work displayed on the coveted back wall of the gallery, artist Cindy Whitaker and photographer Fred Howland will be exhibiting their finest.
