No cold toes on Nevada Day: Helpful tips for keeping your feet warm parade day

Jump-start your Nevada Day with a brisk run or walk through the streets of beautiful Carson City. Don’t let cold toes be the unnerving end to your Nevada Day fun.
According to the National Weather Service, overnight lows Friday night into Saturday morning will be in the low to mid 20s then warming with daytime high temperatures in the mid 40s, chilling off to around 20 on Saturday night.

The cold autumn air can make toes cold and there are definite podiatric downsides when cold toes become more than a simple annoyance.
Injury to the microcirculation of the nail bed can increase susceptibility to fungal toenails. Prolonged repeat injury can damage skin making it dry, cracked, and painful from lack of microcirculation.
Runner's using minimalist shoes can be more susceptible to issues with vasospasm, the constriction of blood vessels that naturally occur when the skin senses cold.
Cold can be exacerbated by the dampness that occurs with every person’s foot having 250-300K sweat glands on the bottom of EACH foot.
Solutions to help cold toes
1) Use a wool blend sock rather than cotton blend. Both can pull moisture away from your skin; however, wool has the additional property retaining heat to keep you warm.
2) Place a small amount of powder in the toe area of shoe to help absorb the sweat from the socks.
3) Wearing compression socks or stockings increase blood circulation to the feet, to help keep your toes warm.
4) Wiggle your toes to stimulate better circulation and get the blood flowing. Keep moving!
5) Pull the liners out of your shoes after exercise so they completely dry out.
