Veterans Day events in and around Carson City

Across the Silver State many Veterans Day celebrations are taking place. Here is a list of events in and around Carson City:

Carson City:

Thursday Nov. 9, 11-11:30 a.m. — Carson City Senior Center Veterans Day Program with remarks from Carson City Mayor, Bob Crowell

Thursday Nov. 9, 2-3 p.m. — Fritsch Elementary School Veterans Day Program

Friday Nov. 10, 3 p.m. — Flag Retirement Ceremony at Fuji Park. More than 2,000 flags deposited by Carson City residents in various collection bins around Carson City will be ceremonially retired. The Master of Ceremonies is Bob Crowell, Carson City Mayor. This ceremony includes a packed schedule of events in the attached PDF below.

Carson Valley/Douglas County:

Thursday Nov. 9, 8:30 a.m. — Veterans are invited to Gardnerville Elementary School to attend a ceremony in their honor. Coffee and snacks will be provided and ceremony begins at 9:00 a.m. The address is 1290 Toler Avenue, Gardnerville.

Thursday Nov. 9, 11:00 a.m. — Douglas County Marines and spouses invited to gather in the training room of the Douglas County Judicial and Law Enforcement building for cake and coffee in celebration of the service’s 242nd birthday. The address is 1038 Buckeye Road, Minden.

Friday Nov. 10, 9 a.m. — Eastside Memorial Park is hosting a presentation of colors and ceremonial wreath laying. The address is 1600 Buckeye Road, Minden.

Saturday Nov. 11, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. — The Carson Valley Inn is hosting it’s annual free spaghetti lunch for veterans and active-duty military. Veterans and a guest can participate by showing military ID, or describing their service to the host. The address is 1627 Highway 395, Minden.

Saturday Nov. 11 — Free admission and open house at The Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in observance of Veterans Day. Complimentary refreshments and cake cutting at noon. The address is 1477 Main Street, Gardnerville.

Reno:

Saturday Nov. 11, 11:11 a.m. - 11:20 a.m. — Opening ceremony with fly-by and ceremonial wreath toss into the Truckee River at the Virginia Street Bridge.

11:20 a.m. — A Veterans Day parade will be held following the Opening Ceremony at the Virginia Street Bridge on the corner of Virginia and 1st Street. The parade begins directly following the opening ceremony with participants north on Virginia Street from Liberty to 5th Street, and finishing some time between 2:00 and 3:00 p.m. Click here for more information.  

Veterans Guest House hosts day of events:

9:00 a.m. — Orange Balloon Release in honor of those lost and affected by Agent Orange health related issues.

Noon - 4 p.m. — Open House at the Veterans Guest House

Saturday Nov. 11, 9:00 a.m. - 9 p.m. — Marked Studios offers free tattoo day and live music and DJ's for veterans and active duty service members. Hundreds of tattoo designs to choose from. Veterans must provide honorable DD-214 or military ID. The address is 945 West Moana Lane, Reno.

Reno-Sparks Indian Colony

Saturday Nov. 11, 12-4 p.m. — RSIC/THPO Cultural Arts Opening Exhibit after Veterans Day Parade in Reno. The featured exhibit is Mr. Burton Pete's Contribution to Native American Arts and Military Service. Light refreshments provided. This event is at the RSIC THPO Cultural Office, 1995 East 2nd Street, Reno.

Saturday Nov. 11, 5:30 p.m. — Reno-Sparks Indian Colony Veterans Dinner at the RSIC gymnasium. The recreation department has planned activities and dinner for children, 5-years and older. The address is 34 Reservation Rd, Reno.

Virginia City:

11a.m. - 12:00 p.m. — Veterans Day Parade along C-Street

Schools, city, state and government offices will be closed on Friday.

Mile High Jazz Band with vocalist Jakki Ford will perform two free big-band concerts in Carson City. The first, on Friday, June 28, is from 6 to 9 p.m. at Mills Park, 1111 E. William Street. Every year throughout our region, pets are found dead in cars due to heat exhaustion, including those with windows cracked.

With outside temperatures often in the 90s and above, internal car temperatures can reach anywhere from 114 degrees after 10 minutes, to 140 degrees after an hour. Cracking a window often does nothing at all as rolling down the windows has been shown to have little effect on the temperature inside a car, according to the Humane Society of the U.S.

UPDATE: The 'S' on the side of the hill in southeast Carson City that commemorates the Stewart Indian School, and has been there for decades, was vandalized over the weekend. It has since been restored.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called Sunday evening to a possible structure fire and brush fire in the 1200 block of Mountain Park Drive off of Marian Avenue.

Today I started pruning out the water sprouts in my four crabapple trees. Some people might call these “suckers,” but suckers grow up from the bottom of the trunk and water sprouts grow in the upper parts of the tree. I have been training three of these trees into a somewhat flattened umbrella shape for almost 20 years. The water sprouts just ruin that effect. So, out they come.

Carson City Fire Department, sheriff's deputies and Nevada State Police were called Sunday morning to a vehicle crash at the intersection of US-50, US-395 South Carson Street and I-580.

The annual Pony Express Re-ride, a re-enactment of the original Pony Express Route that spanned nearly 2,000 miles passing through what are now seven western states, returns to the Carson City area on Wednesday, June 26.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called Saturday night to a brush fire in the area of Lepire Drive in East Carson City.

Earlier this month, Dirk Roper, owner and CEO of Roper’s Heating and Air Conditioning, made the first of many deliveries of the summer of 50 fans to the Carson City Senior Center as part of the KOLOCares 2024 Fan Drive to help Carson City seniors stay cool this summer.
