Events around Carson City on Veterans Day, Monday, Nov. 12
We honor those who have served our country today on this Veterans Day, Monday, Nov. 12, 2018. Take a moment to thank those who have given in service and sacrifice to our great country, and remember those veterans who are no longer with us. Around Carson City and throughout Northern Nevada, federal, state and local government offices are closed.
On Sunday, the centennial anniversary of World War I Armistice was observed at the Nevada State Museum in downtown Carson City with a "Bells of Peace" commemoration featuring the replica Liberty Bell displayed in Loftin Park, the outdoor courtyard just east of the Dema Guinn Concourse. And on Friday, The Battle Born Memorial was unveiled on the State Capitol grounds in Carson City behind the Nevada State Library and Archives, dedicated to Nevada’s 895 fallen service members. — Good Eats for a Great Cause, to benefit Northern Nevada Dream Center. 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Chili's. Enjoy some amazing food and help the Northern Nevada Dream Center at the same time. Eat lunch or dinner at the Carson City Chili’s today, mention the Northern Nevada Dream Center during your meal and Chili’s will donate 20 percent of your ticket to the Northern Nevada Dream Center. 3784 US Highway 395.
— Carson City Democrats luncheon features preview of New Veterans Home. 11:30 a.m. Wendy Simons, Deputy Director of Wellness at the Nevada Department of Veterans Services, will be the featured speaker at the Carson Democrats' Veteran's Day luncheon. The program will include a photographic preview of the soon-to-open Northern Nevada State Veterans Home. Part of Nevada's Veterans In Care (VIC) program, the new facility is currently nearing completion in Sparks. Construction, which Ms. Simons oversaw, broke ground on July 17, 2017. The ceremonial ribbon cutting, officiated by Gov. Brian Sandoval, will take place on Monday, December 17th.
This event is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Monday, November the 12th, Veteran's Day 2018, in the banquet room of Carson City's Round Table Pizza, on Retail Drive just off College Parkway. All are welcome.
— Free Hair Cuts For U.S. Vets. Simply Divine is offering free haircuts for U.S. military veterans on Monday, Nov. 12 from 1-6 p.m. at 101 Hot Springs Road #4D in Carson City. Call 775-515-4148 for more information.
— The 10th annual Celebrity Chef & Harvest Dinner, a benefit for The Greenhouse Project, takes place Monday, Nov. 12 at Cafe at Adele’s, in what has become one of the area’s most anticipated events. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Seating for the Celebrity Chef & Harvest Dinner is limited. Tickets cost $200 each, available at Café at Adele’s, 1112 N. Carson St., Carson City. — High Sierra Swing Dance Club weekly West Coast swing dance lessons. 5:30 p.m. Come join us every Monday evening at Carson Lanes, 4400 Snyder Ave, 775-883-2606, for a friendly, casual, fun night of dancing to DJ music: West Coast Swing, Country 2step, Nigh Club, and even a few latin tunes. — Ripped Fitness Classes, Western Nevada College. 5:30 p.m. Ripped is designed to help everybody meet their ultimate fitness goals in a super-fun group exercise environment. This 1-hour class combines Resistance, Interval, Power, Plyometrics, Endurance, core and offers a very important Diet program on the Rippedplanet website. RIPPED is for every-body and every fitness level. Cardio, Weights, Fun and Done! Students should plan to eat a snack or small meal about 45 minute sbefore class, bring a water bottle, towel and wear exercise clothes and shoes. This is an adult class, great for both men and women, and students aged 14 and up. Seniors and WNC employees receive a 15 percent discount.
— Tai Chi Classes Hosted by Continuing Education at Western Nevada College, 5:30 p.m., First United Methodist Church of Carson City, N Division St 212, Carson City. Explore the ancient Chinese martial art known as "meditation in motion." Learn to exercise using calm, slow motions with the aim of promoting health and longevity. Tai Chi training involves learning solo routines, known as forms. Tai Chi's health training concentrates on relieving the physical effects of stress on the body and mind. The class will be held at the First United Methodist Church on the corner of Division and Musser. There is also a class on Wednesday, 5:30 p.m. at the same location. Class will not meet the week of Thanksgiving.
Five-day video clinic to stop smoking. As a lead-up to the American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout, a free 5-day Stop Smoking Video Clinic will be hosted by Doctor Arthur Weaver. The five night video series runs Sunday thru Thursday, Nov. 11-15, at 7 p.m. each evening in the Carson City SDA Fellowship Hall – 405 College Parkway, Carson City. If you know someone who is in need of putting the tobacco addiction behind them, please help them find us for this very important clinic. The goal is to stop smoking now.

— Winter Conditioning Program at Well Being Fitness. 9 a.m. 1851 S Roop St, Unit 145, Carson City. Winter sports and activities are on the horizon! Join us at Well Being (Massage and Functional Fitness) and prepare your body for success. Our Winter Conditioning Program starts on October 29. Two separate 3 week programs are offered w/a one week break (Thanksgiving) between the two. We focus on strength, dynamic balance and stability, and muscular endurance (yes, that means cardio!) as they relate to winter sports and activities like snow-mobile excursions, snow shoeing, skiing and snowboarding, and all the Nordic and back country activities on your list.
— Patricia Ann Probst: An Artist of the Movement. 11 to 6 p.m. The Charlie B Gallery is proud to announce the coming of a ceramic celebration art show and sale: “Patricia Ann Probst: An Artist of the Movement.” The gallery will offer many works created by Patricia Ann Probst (1941-2016). — Veterans Outreach Center Clothing Donation Drive, Nov. 4-11, at the Western Nevada College Veterans Resource Center, third floor of the Cedar Building, as well as on the University of Nevada, Reno campus, first floor of the Joe Crowley Student Union, second floor of the Knowledge Center, and second floor of the Pennington Student Achievement Center. Accepting donations of underwear, gloves, socks, toilet paper and reading glasses.
— Christmas tree permits available on Carson, Bridgeport ranger districts. Permits to cut Christmas trees on the Carson and Bridgeport Ranger Districts of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest will be available for purchase beginning Thursday, Nov. 1. The U.S. Forest Service Christmas Tree Program is designed for families, businesses, and institutions wishing to cut their own trees for decorating. Christmas tree permits must be purchased in person and are issued on a first-come, first-serve basis for $10 each, with a limit of two trees per household. Permits are nonrefundable and nontransferable, and only valid through Dec. 25, 2018. The Ranger Districts have a limited amount of Christmas tree permits available, and once those allotted permits are sold, no more will be available.
— The Nevada Artists Association (NAA) presents the annual Nevada Day Art Show, now through Nov. 30. Entries in all categories are judged with cash prizes awarded to winners. The NAA Gallery is located at 449 W. King Street in Carson City and is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday.
— Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space is currently seeking individuals and pairs interested in leading interpretive programs in one of our many parks and open spaces. Interested individuals and pairs are encouraged to apply. If interested, go here.
— Carson City Art Gallery features Show by Erik Holland. 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Celebrate the artwork of Erik Holland. He has worked as an artist his entire adult life. He started painting murals in Fairbanks, Alaska in the 1990's. He then moved to Reno, Nevada, achieving his dream of living in the high desert. He has had a one man show in Reno every year since 2001. The show was born on a desire to depict the many sides of America. Amerika is spelled with a K to denote concern with our troubled times. The images come from the life of artist Erik Holland, starting in 1980, when he painted "Spirit of the Eighties" The show is in fact a retrospective of the artist's life from 1980 to the present. — The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition, Americana with Cadmium Orange, by artist Gig Depio at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Depio is an artist and an advocate for public art in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was awarded the 2016 Fellowship Grant in Painting by the Nevada Arts Council (NAC). He has worked on various exhibitions and projects with the Nevada Museum of Art, Nevada Arts Council’s OXS Gallery, and UNLV Marjorie Barrick Museum, among others. Depio graduated from Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines. He lives in Las Vegas with his family. Carson City Courthouse Gallery, 885 E. Musser Street in Carson City.
