Know Your Neighbor: 5 Questions for Karen Abowd
Know Your Neighbor: 5 Questions is a series in which local residents are asked five questions so we as neighbors can get to know each other better.
Our first Know Your Neighbor is Karen Abowd, who is in her last term on the Board of Supervisors.
What brought you to Carson City, and what has made you stay?
My husband and I moved to Carson City over 38 years ago because his parents had opened up the restaurant in Carson City known as Adele's. My husband, Charlie, was working for a restaurant in Seattle, WA, where we lived at the time. His mother asked him why he was doing that there when they really needed him to help them out at Adele's. So we moved and here we are. The restaurant has been there 40 years and Charlie and I have owned it longer than his parents.
Why did you want to join the Board of Supervisors?
Why I wanted to be a part of the Board of Supervisors has to do with vision for a community. I am also an Interior Designer by trade and urban design always intrigued me in school. That said, my husband would always tease me about "the world according to Karen," because I would always express my opinion about how I envisioned things should be. I became involved with a group of folks from our community who agreed with the direction I thought was needed for our community and they encouraged me to run. The rest is history.
If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be?
If I could change one thing about the world I would want to see more tolerance of others and their differences, and establish one day a week with NO electronics so folks "Talk" to one another.
What is your greatest passion?
My greatest passions are gardening and painting.
What is next for you after you leave the board?
After I leave the board I will still be involved with the Arts and Culture Commission for two more years. I am president of The Greenhouse Project, so forwarding its sustainability in perpetuity will be my focus as will working with my husband at Cafe at Adele's until the restaurant, which is for sale, is sold. Beyond that, I hope travel is in my future.
