Happy Thanksgiving 2019: Carson City events for Thursday, Nov. 28

The last Thursday of November means a big gobble gobble, Happy Thanksgiving to all. Enjoy in the games, festivities, activities at home and outdoors. Events are at a minimum, for obvious reasons, but the two big ones are traditions for us in the capital city. The Carson City Turkey Trot at the Governor's Mansion and the free Carson Nugget Thanksgiving community dinner. Enjoy your day and any slight break in the weather. More winter storms are on the way.

Here's what's happening Thursday:

— Carson City Turkey Trot 2019 at the Governor's Mansion. 8:30 a.m. Hosted by St. Teresa of Avila Catholic School, the Turkey Trot takes place on Thanksgiving before the football games, the big meal, the parades and the pies. Get in a little exercise with a few 100 of your neighbors, some dressed in Thanksgiving costumes! It’s an event the whole family will enjoy and may even become a new Thanksgiving Day tradition! The event begins in front of the Governor’s Mansion and meanders through the west side of town. Several events to choose for the day, from the 5K (3.1 miles) or 8K (5 miles) run/walk, or the Gobble Wobble Kids Fun Run! Long sleeve event shirts and a small swag bag for all participants! Pumpkin pies and medals given to the top 3 finishers for men and women.

— Capital City Tradition: Carson Nugget prepares for annual community Thanksgiving dinner. 11 a.m. Carson Nugget hosts its annual Thanksgiving Day dinner Thursday, a Carson City tradition held for more than six decades. The Carson Nugget Hotel and Casino along with Friends in Service Helping, also known as FISH, will host the 62nd Thanksgiving Community Feast, where all are invited for a free holiday dinner with turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, pies and more. This tradition is the largest and longest running Thanksgiving community event in Carson City history, said Carson Nugget owner and general manager Dean DiLullo. The feast is free and open to the public. According to Jim Peckham, executive director of FISH, 200-plus meals are delivered to and eaten with home bound residents via local church members who join together as a part of “Grace Works.” Another 800-plus people will enjoy their dinner in the Nugget Ball Room with all the fixin’s and interacting with local dignitaries who will work as food servers and waiters. All are welcome and everything is free. The feast will begin at 11 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, and will run until 1 p.m. at the Carson Nugget, 507 N. Carson Street in the upstairs banquet room. This annual event is sponsored by FISH, the Carson Nugget and the Hop and Mae Adams Foundation.

— Downtown Carson City Then and Now: Telegraph Square sign to be unveiled Saturday, Nov. 30. Once upon a time in 2002 there was a sign on Telegraph Square in Carson City that stood there tall and proud for 15 years. It survived the depression during the recession and was found in the boneyard during the Curry street renovation. Well, that was then and now the sign has been found, refurbished and brought back to life with new and established businesses from that era. On Saturday, Nov. 30, 11 a.m. at Telegraph Square join the Downtown 2020 Group as we celebrate the unveiling of the new sign with Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell and meet participating business owners. There will be free food and raffles from the following businesses from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Telegraph Square: Carson Jewelry and Loan, BattleBorn Social, Cipriani’s Barbershop, Champagne Beauty Bar, Fabulous You Salon, Cucina Lupo, Rustically Divine, Squeeze In, Union Eatery and Tap House, Westside Pour House, Peak Real Estate, Old Globe Saloon and more.

— DeBug Computer in Carson City to host pictures with Santa to benefit non-profit Between Horses and Humans. DeBug Computer is hosting its annual Photos with Santa event on Saturday, Nov. 30, between 3 and 6 p.m. at its Carson City location, 1817 N. Stewart Street No 30. Keith Barham, president and co-owner of DeBug Computer, said this the seventh year the company has hosted the event, and each year, all proceeds are donated to an area non-profit. “This year, we’ve chosen Between Horses and Humans, a non-profit organization teaching leadership through horsemanship to children dealing with difficult life situations and personal challenges,” he said. “We love their mission and hope to help bring more visibility to the great work they do.” The program builds leadership and communication skills, and assists participants with social, personal and emotional issues, said Barbara Slade, president of Between Horses and Humans. Activities are offered free to participants. “Horses shaped my life and gave me remarkable experiences in which to grow. We want to share experiences and the magic of horses with as many children as we can, giving them moments that are life changing and empowering,” she said. “We are thrilled to have been chosen by DeBug Computer this year. — Carson City, Lyon and Douglas Toys for Tots hotline to open Dec. 3. The Carson City region's Toys for Tots program is ready to serve families in need this holiday season. Hotlines open Dec. 3 and run to Dec. 20, 2019 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Contributions of toys may be made in 125 locations in Carson City, Douglas, Storey and Lyon counties. — Sierra Lutheran And Fellowship of Christian Athletes Team Up For Trees For The Troops. Sierra Lutheran High School and Fellowship of Christian Athletes are partnering to cultivate support for Trees For the Troops, a local effort to generate funds to gift Christmas trees to active military at the Mountain Warfare Training Center in Bridgeport, Calif. The goal for Trees for Troops is to raise $2,250 in community support to fund the equivalent of 75 Christmas trees for active servicemen and servicewomen at MWTC, to be delivered on December 1 and 8.
“Sierra Lutheran is excited to be working with FCA on this very important initiative,” Director of School Development Brian Underwood said. “The opportunity to support our brave servicemen and servicewomen represents a worthwhile gesture to acknowledge the sacrifices our military makes on a daily basis.
Community members can make financial donations at any level. The average discounted cost for a tree is $30. Donations can be made by check - payable to FCA, and dropped off at the FCA Christmas tree lot on Carson St across from the Ormsby House, or at SLHS. — The Twelve Days of Christmas: Thanking our Carson City community for shopping local. Shop local at participating businesses and receive a drawing ticket! — Carson City's Vitalant is hosting a 'Food & Toy Drive' through Dec. 22 to benefit local charities. Carson City's Vitalant, located at 256 E Winnie Ln, is hosting a food drive and gift drive now through Dec. 22 to benefit Northern Nevada Dream Center and the Boys & Girls Club of Northern Nevada. Gifts can be any age range so long as they are unwrapped. — Carson City area food drive happening now to Dec. 21 to benefit Food For Thought. Krisha Caraway with Valley Realty and Management is hosting a food drive to benefit Food For Thought in Carson City. The food drive runs now through Dec. 21 and items can be dropped off between the hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday to her office in Valley Realty and Management located at 302 E William Street.

Established in 2007, Food for Thought was founded on the goal to feed hungry children on the weekend so they can return to school Monday ready to learn. Each Friday, Food for Thought provides a healthy bag of food to hungry children in Carson City, and parts of Douglas County, allowing these children to eat on the weekends and to arrive at school on Monday nourished and ready to learn. Items that are most beneficial to be accepted are:

— Carson City Farmers Insurance District Office is a Toys for Tots Drop Off Location. Farmers Insurance District Office is pleased to once again be a drop off location for Toys for Tots. — Ron Wood Family Resource Center looking for volunteers during the Holidays. Ron Wood Family Resource Center is gearing up for the holidays. We are looking for volunteers to help distribute food for our children and families in need. If you can spare a couple of hours or more during the week, please call Ron Wood Family Resource Center at (775) 884-2269 or stop by our office at 2621 Northgate Lane No. 62 in Carson City. There is no better gift than giving to those less fortunate.

— Urgent Care hosts food drive for the Dayton area. With Thanksgiving around the corner, Dayton Urgent Care will be collecting non-perishable items for local families. Item such as boxed stuffing, gravy, canned veggies, boxed desserts, boxed potatoes, canned yams, canned soups and soup mix. In the past years we have had such a great turn out with our other drives. The Dayton community has come together and has done such a great job helping out the kids and their families. Dayton Urgent Care would like to thank the Dayton community for all of their help in times of need. For the past few years we have been working with a great person by the name of Terri Gahr. Terri makes sure that all of the items that we collect get to the families that need them. We collect items year round, we always have our collection bin in the lobby so anyone at any time can drop items off. Food items can dropped off at Dayton Urgent Care, 901 Medical Center Drive, Dayton, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you would like to help out we also collect items such as school supplies, coats, shoes, clothes and personal hygiene items. When it comes to shoes and clothes we look for items that can be used by kids K-12 grade. We will be having our Angel tree as well again this year. The tree will be going up in November. — Photos with Santa to Benefit The Carson City Greenhouse Project. Santa will be appearing at St. Nick's Village, located at Casino Fandango between the Sky Bridge and Galaxy Theater, each Saturday and Sunday between Thanksgiving and Christmas from 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. The first 4X6 photo with Santa is free, and donations will be accepted to benefit The Greenhouse Project. The Greenhouse Project (TGP) is a Carson City nonprofit with a mission of growing, giving and teaching for a healthier, greener, and sustainable community. The organization grows thousands of pounds of produce each year for the underserved in Carson City, and it provides garden-based learning opportunities for students and the community. At two micro-farm sites, one on the campus of Carson High School and the other at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center, farm managers and staff utilize organic growing practices and strive for sustainability. A multitude of flowering plants are propagated throughout TGP gardens to encourage native pollinators and beneficial insects to balance garden pests. In addition to the produce that is donated to area food banks, TGP supports Future Farmers of America (FFA) and provides fresh produce and herbs to the Carson High School culinary program.

— Carson City family keeps Tiffani and Bailee's annual Sealed Toy Drive alive in memory. Now through Dec. 2. Tiffani Barber was diagnosed with stage four brain cancer on Dec. 8, 2012. For those who did not know Tiffani, all she ever wanted to do was help people. She carried water and snacks in her car to give to the homeless and people less fortunate than her. It came as no surprise to the people closest to her, when the social worker assigned to her case to Tiffani's hospital room and asked what she needed, Tiffani replied with, "How can I help?"
After much discussion, she found out that Lucile Packard Children's Hospital was in grave need of sealed toys for the children who have no immune system and have to brand new toys. They couldn't even leave their Hospital room. Tiffani got busy and called her sister, Bailee, to put out boxes all over Carson City to collect toys, while Tiffani got busy spreading the word on social media from her hospital bed. Tiffani had one wish: It was to please keep this Toy Drive going after she passed. That's exactly what her sister Bailee and her family have done. The Toy Drive is now underway, beginning Nov. 1, 2019 and comes to an end on Dec. 2, 2019. Please help us, help these kids! For more information or questions, contact Brad Barber at 775-721-5941.
