Three Carson High School students arrested after fight Tuesday
A well positioned presence of Carson City sheriff’s officers patrolled areas across the Carson High campus Wednesday afternoon, a day after a fight broke out after school that resulted in three arrests when investigators viewed video of the incident. Allegations have been made the fight was racially motivated.
The incident Tuesday in the Seely Loop area involved three black male juvenile victims and three white male juvenile suspects. A crowd of around 30 students witnessed the fight, which broke up as soon as officers arrived, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.
Nobody was hurt in the incident but video was collected in which investigators were able to determine who the suspects were and then subsequently made arrests later that evening, said Furlong. The identities of the suspects were not made available because they are juveniles.
“The video showed exactly how the fight started and that gave us the cause to make arrests,” said Furlong. “I expect some expulsions and suspensions are very likely.” Two of the suspects were charged with battery. One of the three was charged with multiple counts of battery, said Furlong.
As far as the fight being racially motivated, Furlong said the sheriff’s office and the Carson City School District are taking the allegations seriously. He said the situation began a couple weeks ago and escalated with the incident Tuesday.
"The school district is working very aggressively on finding everyone who was at the fight. Even the onlookers who were instigating the problems. "This is not being taken lightly for everyone involved, including those who were videotaping. We are looking at their participation in this as well.”
With investigators viewing videos of the incident, it also showed several students videotaping with their smartphones.
“The videos put it into perspective,” he said.
