Employees jailed, seen on video attempting to break into safe at Carson City motel

A man and woman were arrested Christmas morning for suspicion of felony burglary after they were seen on surveillance video attempting to break into a safe belonging to their employer, a Carson City sheriff's deputy report states.

Sharlene Gail Dick, 53, and Alberto Rios Chia, 59, both listed as Carson City residents, were taken into custody at 8:37 a.m. in the 1300 block of North Carson Street.

According to the arrest report, deputies were dispatched to a motel for reports of a male in the lobby who was breaking into a safe. Dispatch advised the reporting party could see the male subject on video surveillance.

Arriving deputies detained the grounds keeper, Alberto Chia who was in the main lobby office behind the employee counter. He was found with a power drill, large metal files and a crow bar, which was on the floor in front of the safe next to him. Officers were informed Chia allegedly tried to open the safe with the tools but was unable to do so.

He was taken into custody. Officers contacted the hotel owner in the main office, who informed them they had full video of the incident as well as video of the female employee who was also involved who had left prior to deputies' arrival. She was later located.

The video clearly shows Chia and the woman, Sharlene Gail Dick, attempting to gain access to the safe, the booking report states.

Officers made contact with owner who stated he was checking the video surveillance for the front office on his cell phone and noticed his grounds keeper, Chia, trying to break into the safe. He stated he called his son who headed down to the office and stated he could see Sharlene Gail Dick, who was a new hire, in the main lobby, trying to make access to the safe.

The owner stated both employees have keys to the main lobby but neither of them should have been there that early. They were taken into custody for suspicion of felony attempted burglary. Bail; $20,000 each.

In other arrests:
— A 39-year-old Carson City man, Louis Carrette, was arrested Dec. 25, 12:59 a.m for suspicion of felony attempted robbery.

According to the arrest reports deputies were dispatched to the Walmart store in the 3200 block of Market Street regarding a theft. Officers spoke with loss prevention who stated a male had attempted to steal 2 car batteries and a DVD set. The man was identified as Carrette. The loss prevention officer stated Carrette placed the two car batteries in his shopping cart, swapped the codes from a different item and went through the self checkout register. The batteries were valued at around $200 and Carrette allegedly swapped the bar code for a $5 item, the report states.

As loss prevention confronted the man near the exit, the suspect pushed one of the employees to the side in order not to be detained. At the same time, another employee pulled the shopping cart away from Carrette to prevent the items from being stolen. Carrette used force and violence against the loss prevention officer in attempting to steal the items, constituting attempted robbery, the arrest report states.

A witness to the incident followed the man as he ran to his vehicle that was parked. A records check of the license plate showed the suspect was the registered owner. Dispatch sent a photograph of the man's last booking photo, which was the same person the officer saw in video surveillance pushing the loss prevention officer, the report states.

On Christmas day, CCSO deputies responded to a domestic dispute involving Carrette. Deputies were aware there was probable cause to arrest him for suspicion of attempted robbery. He was arrested and booked into Carson City Jail. Bail: $40,000.

According to the arrest report, deputies respond to a report where a car had crashed into a parked vehicle with a camper. The officer made contact with the driver who identified herself and said she knew she as going to jail. The officer asked why. The woman said she shouldn't be driving, the report states.

The woman had a hard time walking, her eyes were glassy and red and her speech was slurred. She had a light odor of alcohol on her breath as she spoke. She said she was driving her boyfriend home from a party where she had consumed two mixed vodka drinks, two beers and some buffet food. She said she had three "hits" from a THC pen at a friend's house prior to the party. She said that on the drive home she began arguing and had crashed into the parked vehicle.

Deputies made contact with a witness who provided a written statement which says that he was outside of a residence when he observed the vehicle swerving down the street at a high rate of speed and hit the back of the parked vehicle. The witness stated a male and female got out of the vehicle, with the female being the driver and the male the passenger, and began stumbling down the street.

The woman agreed to standardized field sobriety tests and was not able to satisfactorily complete the tests. She was arrested for suspicion of DUI. She provided a preliminary breath test of .28 and provided two evidentiary blood samples at Carson City Jail. Bail: $3,637.
