Rotarians team up to beautify Lone Mountain Cemetery in Carson City with tree donation
The Lone Mountain Cemetery is getting greener with help from two local Rotary Clubs.
The Rotary Club of Carson City and the Cap City Passport Rotary Club teamed up with the Carson City Parks and Recreation Department on a beautification project at the cemetery.
The clubs purchased and donated 26 large trees that have been planted in a developing area on the northeast side of the property.
“Supporting the environment is one of seven areas of focus for all Rotary Clubs,” Rotary Club of Carson City President Joe Walls said. “After meeting with city leaders, it was decided that the trees would do the most good in the cemetery.
Carson City Parks Project Manager Nick Wentworth agrees.
“This section of the cemetery will be developed over the next few years," Wentworth said. "By planting the trees now, we ensure that they will take root and mature by the time we expand.”
The city is installing drip lines to support the trees and other landscaping. The donated trees include London Plains, Lyndon Green Spire, Autumn Blaze Maple, Flowering Pear and Canadian Red Choke Cherry.
“It’s important that we create an inviting and welcoming place for people to grieve their loved ones,” Wentworth said. “A beautiful and shaded area will provide that.”
The cemetery is currently home to nearly 500 trees spread across 32 acres. More than 100 of those have been planted since 2019.
