Events around Carson City for Wednesday, June 26

With a windy cool down headed our way, activities around the Carson City area Wednesday, June 26 will make for a breezy good time. Looking at the day ahead there's a walk hosted by parks and recreation, kids events, Wheeled Food Wednesday at the Brewery Arts Center, a free "rough cut" feature film screening at the Carson Nugget, Young Chautauquans at Dangberg Historic Park and more.

— Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: Graphically Defined. 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. This a group exhibition of work by 17 Western Nevada College students. This exhibit includes a wide variety of art including ceramics, drawing, graphic design, painting and photography that shows the diversity of the students’ creativity. The Business Resource Innovation Center (BRIC) is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. 108 E Proctor St.,
Carson City.

— Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'New Crop 2019' exhibit. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition, "New Crop 2019", by artists Mark Combs and Frances Melhop at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The reception and the exhibition are free and the public is cordially invited. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sculptor Mark Combs gives viewers two approaches to his metalwork. His earlier distressed metal car-part sculptures are ornamented with soldered rods and bolts reflecting a ruptured system both socially and figuratively. His carefully hammered bone pieces came into shape after hours of forging as a nod to death and celebrations of life. Photographer Frances Melhop documents aging rural structures with classic color photography. In Vanish, her printed enlargements of unnamed 19th century portraits on silk are elevated to fly across our vision like fleeting memories.

— Carson City Cooperative Extension 2 Day Camps: How to Raise Small Farm Critters. 8:30 a.m. Carson City University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, in partnership with Carson City Parks and Recreation and Friends of Silver Saddle Ranch, is offering two weekly sessions at Silver Saddle Ranch, 2648 Carson City Road in Carson City, for youth who are not able to keep or raise a small farm animal to experience working with either rabbits or goats. Area 4-H leaders will bring their animals for attendees, 9 – 14 years of age, to work with in these hands on day camps. Attendees will learn what it takes to select and raise a rabbit or goat – handling, health and nutrition, showing, housing and how to have fun. A fee of $50 per attendee, per camp, includes water, snacks and basic educational materials. Week Two: Funny and Fabulous Goats – June 25 – 28, 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Please call the Carson City Cooperative Extension office at 775-887-2252 to register for one or both day camps.

— Creative Kids Camp offered at Carson City's Brewery Arts Center. 9 a.m. This year, the Creative Kids Camp at Carson City's Brewery Arts Center is exploring nature through arts and crafts. Children can create a variety of items inspired by nature including garden stepping stones and rock accents. Dragon flies will soar in and out of a yard. We will capture the wind in a water bottle. And feeding the flighty feathered friends will be fun. And among other crafts, we may find some silly snails. See the video here. Kids ages 6-13 will make items great for the garden or indoors. All inspired by nature. The Creative Kids Camp runs June 24-28 from 9 a.m. to noon.

— Children's Museum in Carson City to host summer science camp. 9 a.m. The Children's Museum in Carson City will host a Summer Science Camp this year. Participants will get hands on lessons in science, art, music and literary projects tied to the Carson River watershed, as well as learning about regional geology and mining, geothermal and solar energy, biomes of Northern Nevada and hot air balloons. The Science Camp is sponsored by Southwest Gas. The camp is $100 per child for Children's Museum of Northern Nevada members and $150 per child for non-members. — Open Studio Painting at the Brewery Arts Center. 9 a.m. Work on your own paintings from subject matter you chose for yourself. The instructor will provide one on one instruction throughout the class. Students may use oil, acrylic, or watercolor paint. Dry media is also welcome. Bring your own supplies and source materials (such as photographs or drawings you wish to paint). This in an open enrollment drop in class so there is no need to enroll in advance. Classes: 9:00-12:00 or 12:30-3:30. $25 per session or $40 for the day, payment made to instructor. For more details contact the Brewery Arts Center here or by calling 883-1976.

— Carson City's Food For Thought to provide daily no cost lunches for kids this summer. Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to noon. In a last minute announcement, Carson City based non-profit Food For Thought, Inc. will continue the Summer Lunch Program during the 2019 season. The program provides free and nutritious lunches to all children under 18. Lunch must be eaten onsite and will be served daily, Monday thru Friday, from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. in Carson City starting Monday, June 17 until August 9. This year only one serving location is available and will take place at The Bridge Church at 901 N. Stewart Street, Carson City. The Summer Lunch Program provides meals to area children who are unable to access other lunch programs during the months off from school.

— Northern Nevada Development Authority hosts The Business Edge, focus on Aerospace in Nevada. 11:30 a.m. Northern Nevada Development Authority's The Business Edge will focus on "Aerospace in Nevada" as part of its ongoing monthly meeting series. Aerospace is more than airplanes, spaceships and drones. Specline Nevada will describe where the leaders in aerospace manufacturing are headed. Also on board, Carson City Airport, Minden-Tahoe Airport, and Silver Springs Airport officials will describe business opportunities in the local area, and the Governor's Office of Economic Development (GOED) will provide an overview of the aerospace industry in the state. The event will be held Wednesday, June 26 at the Carson Valley Inn in Minden from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

— Basic Pottery Skills at Ogres-Holm Pottery. 1 to 4 p.m. Studio manager, Lucas Lamont, introduces you to clay, in this 6-week open start class, designed to get you started with clay. The syllabus includes pinch pots, coil pots, sculpture, and an introduction to wheel throwing. $175 for 6 week class including open studio times or $45 for drop in classes. 1215 S. — Wine and Dine Watercolor Classes. 4:15 to 5:45 p.m. Students get a reminder text each week. Drop in basis — no monthly commitment necessary. — Wheeled Food Wednesdays at Carson City's Brewery Arts Center. 5:30 p.m. The Brewery Arts Center campus in Carson City is the place to be every Wednesday this summer, from 5:30 to 8 p.m., as we bring the best food trucks in Nevada to you for a mid-week food fest! It’s too hot to cook, so just let these folks do it for you This week the confirmed trucks are King of Kings, Hot Rodz, Bus Boy, Black Rock Bison and Press Coffee and Waffles. Just as they did last year, the BAC will have kid’s activities and yummy beer and wine selections. Come to the BAC campus’s parking lot, located at 511 Wet King Street, each Wednesday from 5:30 to 8 p.m. to be a part of the community fun.

— Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space hosts 'Walk with the Weeds.' 5:30 p.m. Noxious weeds cause damage to our native Nevadan plants, causing issues for the farming industry, local wild-life, and more. Learn how to recognize common invasive weeds, in addition to our Nevada native plants, on Wednesday, June 26 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. You will also have the opportunity to witness the progress of a biological-control experiment targeting the noxious weed, Canada thistle. Long pants and closed-toed shoes are advised for this short, educational hike. This hike will be at Morgan Mill Preserve, 5705 Morgan Mill Road, Carson City. Register at: www.carson.org/ccpr

— Young Chautauquans at Dangberg Historic Park. 6:30 p.m. Young Chautauquans of the Douglas County Historical Society will present "We Taught the World New Ways to Dream" at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park. The Douglas County Historical Society Young Chautauqua presenters are 17 year old Sandia portraying poet "Anne Bradstreet”, 17 year old Jahmilia portraying humanitarian “Sarah Winnemucca”, 12 year old Micaiah portraying author “E.B. White”, 12 year old Julia portraying nurse “Florence Nightingale”, 12 year old Adalee portraying artist “Wanda Gag”, 11 year old Mamre portraying explorer “Jacque Cousteau”, 10 year old Rain portraying aviator “Amelia Earhart”, 8 year old Samuel portraying entrepreneur “Walt Disney” and 6 year old Levi portraying astronaut “Neil Armstrong”. Please bring your own seating and no pets allowed - service animals only. Guests are welcome to bring a picnic to enjoy as no food or beverages will be sold at this event.

— Spanish Night, Salsa Dance Lessons in Downtown Carson City. 6 p.m. SALSA Wednesdays located at Yaple's Ballroom Dance Studio, 315 N. Carson St. Carson City. Classes are 6 pm Intermediate Level Class, 7 pm Beginning Level Class. Just $10 a class​. Then after your dance lesson, just for us food and drink specials offered across the street at Battle Born Social! The dance floor is open, music will be playing and you can continue dancing and practicing your dance moves! The Salsa Social will cost NOTHING, only but your support to the restaurant and bar.

— Pajama Storytime at Carson City Library. 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Wear your PJs for a bedtime-themed storytime! Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times. 900 North Roop Street.

— Rough Cut Screening of Feature Film to show free at Carson Nugget. 6:30 p.m. Wired Wednesday will meet at Carson Nugget, Wednesday, June 26 at 6:30 p.m. in Banquet Hall C upstairs. All ages are welcome, however this film would be potentially Rated R due to language, violence and an off camera scene that is heard but not seen. This will be a screening of the rough cut of "First Date" :After being conned into buying a shady '65 Chrysler as his first car, Mike's first date plans, with girl-next-door Kelsey, implode as he finds himself targeted by criminals, cops, and a crazy cat lady. A feature length film, Darren Knapp co-wrote and co-directed with Manuel Crosby, an USC film school graduate who will be in attendance to discuss the film. We are looking for constructive criticism while the film is still in rough cut, which was running just over 2 hours a week ago. Another film by Manuel with be shown, a short western called "Dead Man's Locket" before the feature. Please bring friends, the filmmaker is primarily looking for feedback from viewers. Food and drink from any of the Carson Nugget restaurants may be brought into the banquet hall and there is no fee for the screening.

— WNC Continuing Education offers Zumba class. 5:45 p.m. Zumba is a dance form and aerobics fitness program. Zumba involves dance and aerobic movements performed to energetic Latin and pop music from countries around the world. The choreography incorporates hip hop, soca, samba, salsa, meringue and mambo. Squats and lunges are also included. Students should wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes, and bring a towel, water and a positive attitude! No prior dance experience is required - Zumba is about making friends, getting a workout, and enjoying yourself! Classes are held at the WNPAC dance studio, located at 951 N Stewart St. The class is $48 and our direct line is 775-445-4241.

— Nevada Arts Council Presents: Bits and Pieces of the Silver State. 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Reno artist Patricia Wallis has a background in plein air painting as well as aerial painting working on canvas, board and copper. Over the past decade she has worked exclusively on copper which gives the image a unique luminescence not found when working with canvas or board. Oil painting on copper goes back to the 15th century although it is rarely used by contemporary artists. Bits and Pieces of the Silver State feature the various elements of nature and provide conceptual basis inn Wallis’ paintings. Go here for more information about Nevada Arts Council.

— Dance Workshop for Couples at Yaple's Ballroom. In this beginner level workshop you must have a partner in this class, we will not be rotating. It can be a friend, husband, wife, boyfriend or girlfriend, you just have to have a buddy with you to be your partner. We are going to learn the style of dance of Night Club Two Step and some other exercises that will help you with your connection to your partner. $20. — Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'The Lay of the Land' at Carson City showing. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents an exhibition, "The Lay of the Land," by artist Fred Howland in the Community Center’s Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition runs now through June 30, 2019. Howland’s passion is to create a sense of time and place through his photographs. He returns to favorite sites to work, like Hope Valley and Genoa, returning to take repeat images in different seasons and lighting. His interest in landscapes go back to his New England roots where he was more comfortable in the outdoors than in school classrooms. The Sierra Room is open to the public during Carson City official meetings including the first and third Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and many afternoons, Monday through Thursday, 5 to 8 p.m.
