Among upcoming events: Thursday is the final day of the Jukebox International Film Festival at the Carson City Community Center. Take in a film screening and talk to the filmmakers who made them. Here's what's happening Thursday:

— Muscle Powered Thursday Morning Hike at Slaughter House Canyon. 8 a.m. Join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City. Muscle Powered is a local non-profit organization that promotes walking, hiking, biking and trail building. A schedule of all upcoming activities and events can be found at www.musclepowered.org/calendar. Thursday's morning hike is at Slaughter House Canyon. Meet at the Hwy 50 Park and Ride, and then carpool and caravan 2.4 miles north from the turnoff on Hwy 28. Thursday morning hikes start at 8 AM and are 2-4 miles with duration of about 90 minutes, sometimes with elevation gains of 500’ or more. Water and closed-toed shoes are required. Hat and poles recommended.

— Music Flicks and Kicks: Jukebox International Film Festival Day 3. Events scheduled throughout the day. Day 3 of a festive gathering that celebrates music-themed films. Thursday will continue to deliver top-notch features about music and musicians, styles, songwriting and music video making. The Jukebox International Film Festival is the place music and flicks collide, bringing enthusiasts and artists together from across the country to the capital city for three days, offering free showings, meet-and-greets and more. The festival is presented in conjunction with Jazz and Beyond: Carson City Music Festival, a three-week, multi-venue concert series underway in the capital city. JIFF is designed to compliment the music festival by presenting films that celebrate music and musicians. The film festival began Monday and runs through Thursday, August 22, at the Bob Boldrick Theater inside the Carson City Community Center.

— Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'New Crop 2019' exhibit. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition, "New Crop 2019", by artists Mark Combs and Frances Melhop at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sculptor Mark Combs gives viewers two approaches to his metalwork. His earlier distressed metal car-part sculptures are ornamented with soldered rods and bolts reflecting a ruptured system both socially and figuratively. His carefully hammered bone pieces came into shape after hours of forging as a nod to death and celebrations of life. Photographer Frances Melhop documents aging rural structures with classic color photography. In Vanish, her printed enlargements of unnamed 19th century portraits on silk are elevated to fly across our vision like fleeting memories.

— Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: Graphically Defined. 8 to 5 p.m. Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) is delighted to present Graphically Defined, a group exhibition of work by seventeen Western Nevada College students. This exhibit includes a wide variety of art including ceramics, drawing, graphic design, painting and photography that shows the diversity of the students’ creativity. The Business Resource Innovation Center (BRIC) is open Monday through Friday 8:00-12:00 p.m. and 1:00-4:00 p.m.

— Nevada Artists Association Judged Photography Show and Summer Show. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Nevada Artists Association Presents: The 2019 Judged Photography Show and The Members' Summer Show. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily except Mondays through September 6. Come and see all the beautiful entries and vote for your top three People's Choice favorites in the Judged Photography Show. The Gallery also offers a wide variety of handcrafted gifts by local artists. We are located at 449 W. King Street at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City.

— Carson City Library hosts Family Storytime. Two sessions. 10:30 a.m. and 12:15 a.m. These are both the same and last 45 minutes. Weekly themed singing, stories, finger-plays, or art centered around a book. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times. 900 North Carson Street.

— Polka Dot Powerhouse Carson City lunch connect to feature clinical hypnotist Dan Kimm. 11:30 a.m. Dan Kimm will be the speaker at the August 22 Polka Dot Powerhouse Carson City Chapter lunch connect at Red's Old 395 Grill 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. His biography and speech topic can be found below. — Food Truck Thursday at Mills Park. Noon to 9 p.m. Food Truck Thursday is held at Mills Park on the second and fourth Thursday of the month and will feature several food trucks. 1111 East William Street, Carson City.

— Carson City Kiwanis Thursday meeting at The Martin Hotel. Noon. Carson City Kiwanis celebrates its 60-year anniversary and looks to continue to be a great service club in this great community. Kiwanis offers an opportunity for leadership and involvement in the improvement of our community. Meetings and projects develop and use leadership skills, expand business contacts and achieve a sense of accomplishment while enjoying a sincere and lasting fellowship. — Inaugural Volunteer Expo hosted by Leadership Douglas County. 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The Douglas County Leadership class of 2019 is hosting the first Volunteer Expo to provide awareness of volunteer opportunities for children and adults in Douglas County and the surrounding area to encourage involvement and promote local organizations in our community through an informational expo. The expo is scheduled for Thursday, August 22, 2019, from 3:30 to 7 p.m. at the Douglas County Community and Senior Center in the Dining Room, Gardnerville. This event is free and we will have raffle prizes for participants. Your entrance into the events ears you a ticket for raffle prizes which include swim and movie passes, gift certificates for various restaurants, coffee shops, and more!

— LEGO Club at Carson City Library. 4 to 6 p.m. Build self-led creations through hands-on learning with LEGO Education materials. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times. 900 North Roop St., Carson City.

— Jazz and Beyond: Impromptu at Comma Courtyard. Tom Stryker’s Impromoptu will be performing. 312 South Carson Street. Enjoy the jazz stylings of Tom Stryker’s Impromptu. Impromptu is led by jazz harmonica player Tom Stryker. He came by his interest and talent in the harmonica at an early age. Along the way, he raised a family and became a successful businessman. And he’s done it all his way.

Tom Stryker’s Impromptu is a well known group in the Carson City area. Impromptu will perform with Tom Stryker on chromatic harmonica, Rocky Tatarelli on tenor sax, Jimmy Vermilion on keyboard and vocals, Neil Strocchio on drums and, Marcy Benner on vocals. Impromptu’s music is varied and will entertain you with “Jazz & Beyond.” This is a free event.

— Summer 2019 Artist Lecture Series: David Cote and Nicole Beck. 5 to 6 p.m. Featured artists David Cote and Nicole Beck will be presenting for 45 minutes each. Carson City BRIC, 108 East Proctor.

— Zentangle Class at Desert Sage Trading Company. 6 p.m. Join us in our new location, 101 Hot Springs Rd in Carson City for a relaxing evening. Zentangle is a fun easy to learn way to create beautiful images by drawing with patterns on tiles and can be transferred to many objects such as glass, metal and furniture. The possibilities are endless. Our amazing teacher is Dee who will be providing instruction, guidance and materials for just $30. Thursday's class is from 6 to 8 p.m. for beyond basics learners.

— Carson City Republicans to host speakers on Blockchain technology. 6:30 p.m. Fandango Ballroom, 3800 S Carson St. The Carson City Republican Central Committee is proud to host speakers on Blockchain technology. The topic is "What is this new technology and why should you care?" Just as the Internet has changed how we intersect with others in our work and personal communities. Elisa Cafferata, Principal of Cafferata & Corp Inc, will show videos on the basics of this technology, show examples how this technology will be used, explain the new laws passed by the Nevada legislature related to this industry, and have Blockchain LLC tell us what they are doing in Northern Nevada. Elisa will be joined by Senator Kieckhefer who sponsored the legislative bills and Matthew Digesti is the Vice President of Government Affairs and Strategic Initiatives of Blockchain LLC. Admission: No charge: The public is welcome.

— Nevada aviation past, present and future presented at Carson City lecture. 6:30 p.m. at Nevada State Museum. From barnstorming pilots of the post-World War I-era — Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart among them — to World War II Army Air Corps training to the present-day Reno National Championship Air Races, aviation has been a mainstay in Nevada. Today, there is a wide variety of aviation happening every day in the Silver State – from gliders above the Carson Valley, to the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds above Las Vegas, to the next generation of fighters at Top Gun above Fallon to who knows what above Area 51.
Kurt Haukohl, the Nevada Department of Transportation’s State Aviation Manager, knows the past, present and future of Nevada aviation and it’s a presentation he’ll share at the Nevada State Museum on Thursday, Aug. 22 as the featured speaker of the monthly Frances Humphrey Lecture Series. His presentation, “General Aviation in Nevada and the Nevada Airport Update,” starts at 6:30 p.m. at the museum’s South Gallery, 600 N. Carson St., Carson City. The cost is $8 for adults, free for museum members and youngsters 17 and younger.

— Pro Jam Night with Lester & Friends at Mangia Tutto. 6:30 p.m. A night out for pro musicians to get together and make some music. Join Brian Lester and Friends every Thursday this summer at Mangia Tutto Pizzeria on the corner of Stewart and Musser St. 6:30 to 9 p.m. Bring your instruments.

— Jazz and Beyond: Under the Radar at McFadden Plaza. 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Under the Radar is a jazz-funk-rock-blues band formed in 2010 after winter jam sessions at a boathouse on the shores of Lake Tahoe. The fireside jam sessions became popular among locals and visitors from around the world. Band members have created a composite tone with a niche sound, influenced by Tower of Power; Earth, Wind & Fire; The Crusaders; Herbie Hancock; Santana; Hendrix; Average White Band; Miles Davis; David Sanborn; and Grover Washington Jr. Band members are Dallas Phillips on sax, David “Fez” Duffie on bass, Richard John on guitar, and Mike Badinger on drums. This is a free event. Seating is limited. Audience is encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs. 310 S. Carson St., Carson City.
