Hello Carson City and welcome to the end of the work week. Today is Friday, Sept. 14, 2018. Among the happenings, there’s a bevy of art events including gourd classes that kick off the Silver State Art Festival at Fuji Park, music and comedy venues, a flu presentation, a morning hike and more to round out the the day.

— Daily through September, Muscle Powered is holding Membership drive to recruit new members. All new and renewing members in the month of September will be entered in a drawing to win a Gregory Hiking Day Pack.

— Muscle Powered works to make Carson City healthier for all citizens and safer and more accessible for bicycling and walking through education and advocacy, the promotion of bicycle and pedestrian friendly infrastructure, and developing and maintaining recreational trails throughout the city. Muscle Powered is also responsible for organized weekly walks, hikes and bike rides, on and off road, throughout Carson City. Go here to learn more and sign up.

— Friday Morning Walk to Kingsview Trail hosted by Muscle Powered, 8 a.m. Join Muscle Powered for its weekly one hour walks to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City. Meet in the parking area on Kings Canyon Road just west of Kingsview Way. Muscle Powered will walk the dirt trail behind the homes. Water and closed-toe shoes required. All walks are 1 to 2 miles with duration of 1 hour with usually negligible elevation gain, and frequently on paved or smooth paths.

The Silver State Art Festival starts Friday with classes beginning at 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and runs through the weekend at the Fuji Park Exhibit Hall in Carson City. The festival features stunning artwork for sale, 40 award winning artists, gourds, beading, basketry, woodwork, paintings, photography, raffles prizes benefiting Advocates to End Domestic Violence and much more. The Silver State Festival includes 3 days of classes featuring beginning and advanced instructional workshops in gourding, carving, weaving, basketry, woodburning, woodturning and much more! This festival runs all weekend at the Fuji Park Exhibit Hall, 601 Old Clear Creek Rd., Carson City.

— Carson Valley Medical Center Hospital Foundation's 9th Annual Fall Classic Golf Tournament, 9 a.m. Carson Valley Medical Center Hospital Foundation is hosting its ninth annual Fall Classic Golf Tournament on Friday, Sept. 14 at Carson Valley Golf Course. Golfers will enjoy breakfast & lunch, bloody mary bar, a 50/50 golf ball drop, great raffles and prizes along with a chance to win a car at the hole-in-one contest sponsored by Michael Hohl. — Flu prevention discussion featured Friday at Carson City Senior Center, 11:45 a.m. Carson City Nevada Triad presents Flu Prevention, a presentation designed to help people become more aware about the dangers of Flu and how to keep the germs away, at the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive, at 11:45 a.m.
Veronica Galas and Nicki Aaker from Carson City Health and Human Services will lead the discussion.

— Carson City Art Gallery’s Artist Reception of the Month, 5 p.m. for September is Roger Freeman, a multi-medium artist living and working in the Carson City area. During his reception you will be able to meet him and talk to him about his wonderful work. Go here to learn more about Freeman and his work. All are encouraged to attend this fabulous artists' reception from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. Carson City Art Gallery & Pottery, LLC is located at 110 S. — Pinch Pot Wine Glass: Cafe Creations with Kym Maehl, Friday, Sept. 14, 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center, 449 W King Street, Carson City. In this class you’ll be using your creative energy to make a drinking vessel with clay. We will be hand building our vessels pinch-pot style and adorning them with our own unique symbolism and creative flair! — Student Art Exhibition: The Wind Calls, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) announces it’s exhibition, The Wind Calls featuring nine University of Nevada, Reno, students’ work. The free exhibition is available to the public through October 9, 2018, Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – noon and 1:00 – 4:00 pm. It is held at the BRIC, 108 E Proctor St., Carson City. The Wind Calls includes work by Mahedi Anjuman, Nicki Bracco, Mark Combs, Teal Francis, Hannah Huntley, Gwaylon Leaf, Frances Melhop, Ally Messer, and Carla Miller. The artists used a wide variety of art media including mixed media, ceramics, sculpture, painting, printmaking, and photography to make their art and comments on contemporary life and society.

— The Capital City Arts Initiative, also known as CCAI, presents its exhibition, "Jenny Raven: The Creative Growth Years 1979 - 1984" with artwork by artist Jenny Raven in the city’s Community Center Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition is available to the public through October 18, 2018. The Sierra Room is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

— Visual Oasis: Works from Creative Growth, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents “Visual Oasis: Works from Creative Growth" at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery in Carson City. The exhibition, with art by 17 artists, will be in the gallery Monday through Friday until Sept. 27, 2018. The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

— Ladies get the last laugh at Nugget’s Carson Comedy Club. 8 p.m. Jill Maragos headlines a special “Ladies Night of Comedy – Where Women Get the Last Laugh” event at the Carson Comedy Club, located inside the Carson Nugget Casino Hotel, 507 N. Carson Street, Friday, Sept. 14, at 8 p.m. Doors open at 7:15. Alatte Coffee, Wine & Deli, also located inside the Carson Nugget, will be offering select wines at $5 a glass for the event. The impact of wildfires in the Western United States on homeowners and condominium insurance will be highlighted Friday at a town hall meeting hosted by the Nevada Division of Insurance.

A 29-year-old man was arrested Saturday for suspicion of domestic battery, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

Mile High Jazz Band with vocalist Jakki Ford will perform two free big-band concerts in Carson City. The first, on Friday, June 28, is from 6 to 9 p.m. at Mills Park, 1111 E. William Street. It is part of the weekly Family Fun Fridays, featuring live music, food trucks, and family activities every Friday through August 9.

Every year throughout our region, pets are found dead in cars due to heat exhaustion, including those with windows cracked.

With outside temperatures often in the 90s and above, internal car temperatures can reach anywhere from 114 degrees after 10 minutes, to 140 degrees after an hour. Cracking a window often does nothing at all as rolling down the windows has been shown to have little effect on the temperature inside a car, according to the Humane Society of the U.S.

UPDATE: The 'S' on the side of the hill in southeast Carson City that commemorates the Stewart Indian School, and has been there for decades, was vandalized over the weekend. It has since been restored.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called Sunday evening to a possible structure fire and brush fire in the 1200 block of Mountain Park Drive off of Marian Avenue.

Today I started pruning out the water sprouts in my four crabapple trees. Some people might call these “suckers,” but suckers grow up from the bottom of the trunk and water sprouts grow in the upper parts of the tree. I have been training three of these trees into a somewhat flattened umbrella shape for almost 20 years. The water sprouts just ruin that effect. So, out they come.

Unquestionably one of the most entertaining groups of celebrities at the pro-athlete dominated American Century Championship this year is the star-studded lineup of comedians playing in the July 10-14 edition of the tournament at Edgewood Tahoe.

Carson City Fire Department, sheriff's deputies and Nevada State Police were called Sunday morning to a vehicle crash at the intersection of US-50, US-395 South Carson Street and I-580.

The annual Pony Express Re-ride, a re-enactment of the original Pony Express Route that spanned nearly 2,000 miles passing through what are now seven western states, returns to the Carson City area on Wednesday, June 26.

The much-anticipated Carson-Tahoe Home & Garden Show is happening this weekend, featuring an impressive array of vendors offering everything from home improvement services and products to health and beauty services and products, ensuring there is something for everyone. Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called Saturday night to a brush fire in the area of Lepire Drive in East Carson City.

A recent cyberattack is impacting casino operations at some northern Nevada casinos.

I had a great opportunity to meet and speak with many people last week at the Dini’s Car Show in Yerington, NV. The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office continually has a booth at many local events. Our Administrative Assistant Kayla and I worked the booth for the entire day. We entered our armored vehicle into the car show, unfortunately it was not eligible to win any prizes, however it was a hit with the crowd.

A Clark County District Judge dismissed the case against six “fake electors” who signed documentation claiming that former President Trump won Nevada in 2020. President Joe Biden won Nevada with over 33,000 votes in the 2020 election.

According to Clark County district Judge Mary Kay Holthus, prosecutors with the Nevada Attorney General’s office filed the case in the wrong venue by applying it to Southern Nevada, when it should have been brought to Northern Nevada.

The Kid’s Monster Lab is for any anyone ages six through thirteen interested in bringing their imagination to life. In this three-week, six-session class, participants will dream up creatures, critters, and monsters to create with their art, their colors, then finally clay and paint. Classes are led by instructor, Kaleb Wyckoff.

Class is a 6 day series beginning July 9th and continuing every Tuesday and Thursday thru July 25th, from 5 to 6 pm.

According to RSVP, the lower Centennial Fields as well as Centennial Park Drive will be open to the public to view the Fourth of July fireworks which will be set off from Eagle Valley Golf Course this year instead of Mills Park.
