Nevada State Museum lecture Friday in Carson City to tell of historic Army convoy
CARSON CITY — This month’s convoy of vintage military vehicles that traveled though Nevada on U.S. Highway 50 was in honor of the 100th anniversary of the first U.S. Army Transcontinental Motor Convoy.
This month’s encore Frances Humphrey Lecture Series at the Nevada State Museum takes a closer look at that original convoy.
The lecture is scheduled for 2 to 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27 in the Nevada State Museum’s South Gallery.
The first Transcontinental Motor Convoy came through Carson City in 1919. The original convoy traveled at about 5 mph and took 62 arduous days, Carson City Chamber Director Ronni Hannaman recently noted in a fascinating article about the convoy's trip to the capital city.
In 1919, after World War 1, the U.S. Army needed to find out if they had the ability to move troops and equipment from the fortified east coast to the west. Trucks were just in their infancy and had been used in Europe during the war to move troops and equipment. The question: “Were our roads up to the needs of the Army Transportation Corps?”
Lecturer Jim Bonar, a director and past president of the Nevada Chapter of the Lincoln Highway Association, takes on that question and will share other stories of the convoy in his presentation, “100 Years Later: The 1919 Transcontinental Military Motor Convoy.”
The museum will also be doing demonstrations of historic Coin Press No. 1 and will be minting its John C. Fremont, Pathfinder medallion. Patrons can purchase a silver blank in the museum store and have their own medallion pressed as they watch.
The cost is $8 for adults, free for museum members and children 17 and younger. Seating is limited. Go to nvculture.org/nevadastatemuseumcarsoncity/events to reserve a seat.
