Observant travelers in Northern Nevada are reporting numerous reindeer sightings along the 85 mile stretch of US 395 between Bordertown, on the north, and Lake Topaz, on the south.

The Willow Reindeer herd now has 3,000 individually crafted works of art. Each reindeer has been signed by the local elementary students that have created it over the past 22 years. With an average of 20 students per class, there have been over 60,000 local children involved in the massive local art project.

Monica Marcinko, also known as Holly Jolly, is setting out on a Journey to publish a children's book called "I want To Be An Elf" This book will teach children and adults you can be whatever you want in life and you should go for it. Monica's motto is " Believe in Your elf!"

The Carson City School District would like to share special thanks to Dolan Auto Group for donating $5,000 to Fremont Elementary School’s Comprehensive Life Skills class. The money was awarded as part of a community benefit program the dealership hosts each year.

I visited a performance center in Richmond, California last week and came away mightily impressed. How's this for a mission statement:

In 2003, I wrote an article on making a home firesafe. I started with this “The raging fires in California are a terrible reminder of the wildfire risk of living in the urban-wildland interface.” Now, 16 years later, that initial sentence bears repeating. With climate change, global warming we are seeing hotter, more intense, faster spreading wildfires than ever before. Fuels such as brush, grasses and trees are tinder dry everywhere, including Northern Nevada.

Following a collaborative recruitment between the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine and Carson Tahoe Health, Lorrel Toft, M.D., F.A.C.C., a cardiovascular critical care physician and researcher, has been recruited as an associate professor for UNR Med’s Department of Internal Medicine as well as a cardiologist on staff with Carson Tahoe Health.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Transportation and Nevada Department of Public Safety, Highway Patrol are reminding drivers and pedestrians to be safe on the road this Halloween and every day.

Sunday will bring cool temperatures and some sunshine with daytime highs in the mid 60s around the capital city region. Lined up today are fall train rides in Carson City and Virginia City, a women veteran's support group meeting, and a a discussion with survivors, family and doctors about metastatic breast cancer. Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region to help the next three days breeze by. Events include Harvest Train festivities at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, Thomas the Tank Engine and steam train rides in Virginia City, the first-ever Gandy Dance in Dayton, October Ghost Walk Tours through downtown Carson City and more!

Breezy and cool conditions are on the way as we look ahead to Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2019. Events lined around the capital city area include art workshops and showings, a "scary makeup" class in time for Halloween at the Carson Nugget, a luncheon with Congressman Mark Amodei hosted by the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce, family story time at the Carson City Library, a women's safety meeting, Salsa dancing and more. UPDATE: The 19-year-old bear captured Tuesday in Carson City by wildlife officials has died as a result of a brain tumor after he was tranquilized, with the intention of being released later into the wild, according to the Nevada Department of Wildlife. With recent bear sightings around Carson City, including Tuesday morning off of Minnesota Street, it is a sure sign that fall has set in as the capital city area is seeing increased bear foraging activity, according to wildlife officials.

Now, we've brought that experience to Carson City with a full time Ninja Gym for ages 6-16. Expert youth motivators acutely teach kids how to defeat obstacles and boost their confidence with each attempt.

CARSON CITY — Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, a mission-driven nonprofit dedicated to empowering educators to achieve excellence in learning, teaching and leading, is pleased to announce it has selected Rachel Croft, fourth grade teacher at Bordewich Bray Elementary School in the Carson City School District, as a 2019 Emerging Leader.

Judge James T. Russell is a fourth generation Nevadan, and has been serving as a Carson City district court judge for over twelve years. This year, following in the footsteps of his relatives, Judge Russell has accepted the position of Grand Marshall for the Nevada Day Parade.

“Pickleball is not an old geezer’s game,” so stated Dina Stultz after finishing a set at Carson’s Multi-use Athletic Center, affectionately known simply as the MAC. She wants to let everyone know that pickleball is a serious game and can help in relieving all sorts health problems including reversing or slowing bone density issues, according to her medical doctor.

Among events for the day, there will be a wreath remembrance ceremony for fallen Carson City law enforcement officers at the sheriff's office, a Muscle Powered morning hike, art showings, and a meeting of the Status of Women in Nevada group at the Carson Nugget. As part of the Jazz and Beyond music festival, there will be an outdoor "Woodstock Remembered" concert at Comma Coffee and a music presentation, "All About that Bass" by Scot Marshall and Friends at the Nevada State Museum.

Heading into the midweek, Wednesday, August 14, 2019 activities abound around the capital city. There's a new group for writers that meets at the Brewery Arts Center; a salary negotiation workshop at WNC, a chautauqua and author presentations at Dangberg Historic Park. There's also the Jazz and Beyond Carson City Music Festival that will feature the Wesley Orsolic Trio during Wheeled Food Wednesday at the BAC, with jams to continue at Living the Good Life; there's also a real estate workshop for veterans, art showings, salsa dancing and more. A Carson City-based nonprofit that teaches the English language to those preparing for U.S. citizenship — and whose founder was recognized in December 2018 as a finalist for the CNN Hero Award — has been picked to receive a national recognition award from the prestigious Manhattan Institute.
